Friday/Sunday WIP

It’s Friday and you start the weekend with a spring in your step, a sparkle in your eye and only the very best of intentions. You tell yourself you’ll be well behaved and won’t get up to any late night hijinks. Just the one drink before heading home for an early night. Then, next thing you know, it’s sometime early on Sunday morning, you’re not exactly sure where you are or where you’ve been although you’ve clearly been out for over 24 hours and are looking decidedly the worse for wear. Surely we’ve all been there? This is a tribute to those ill advised nights out that are usually the most fun…

There’s nothing we at id-iom like more that a little road trip and it’s always good to catch up with old friends so when we had an offer to go down to Portsmouth and brighten up MyDogSighs’ aptly named studio ‘The Doghouse’ we jumped at the chance. The only shame was that we had to leave pretty much as soon as we’d finished to make it back to London in time for a friend’s party. Next time for drinks then…

A box for Sunday!

Little Sunday here came into the UK on a false dog passport from Lithuania to be sold on at a huge profit. She was caught at dog customs and put into quarantine but after the necessary checks was certified healthy, given a new British passport and found her way to our friend who’s a dog trainer via Dogs Trust. Since then she’s got a little box for her to snooze in and also to stand on whilst training. And who better to give the box a little lick of colour than us. As the box is used both sides up we wanted her name to be legible either way and to give it a nice lady-like colour scheme. Add to that the ‘with love from Lithuania’ and you’ve got the whole package. Now doesn’t she look just adorable?

Iteration No. 47

Iteration No. 47

Iteration No. 47

This poor canvas has had a hard life. It’s been in development hell for a good 4 or 5 years or so with the pair of us making multiple attempts to finish it over that time. Things weren’t looking good for this old chap. The paint was getting thicker after every move and it would inevitably be whitewashed when whoever was last working on it would proclaim it a failure and move onto something more fruitful. It would then be handed over to the other member of id-iom with a snarky ‘Back to you. Best of luck with it…’

After languishing in this state for a long time it would seem like the muse felt sorry for both us and the canvas as she has graced us with a picture that we both haven’t yet wanted to whitewash. I’m still not sure if we’re actually happy with it or just happy to have it out of our hair. Anyway, please behold iteration No 47. Let’s hope it’s the last…

Don’t take life too seriously…

It’s been in the pipeline for a good while now but we finally managed to get our wall completed in our local boozer in Brixton, The Hand in Hand. After batting potential designs back and forth for a while we finally came up with a winner in the wall of quotes featuring Winston Churchill quotes, an ambigram, a watercolour & stencilled wallpaper background and my favourite quote of the lot ‘Don’t take life too seriously. No one is getting out alive…’

One of the obvious problems with working in a pub (for us at least) is the proximity to beer. We overcame this potential pitfall by starting early and having a breakfast beer to aid in the creative process. Three and a half pints later and we were all done and dusted. Then it was time to get out of there before we got in too deep and spent the entire day in there…

You give love a bad name…

So as it was Valentine’s Day on Sunday we thought we’d get this up after we’d finished painting the piece we got up yesterday. It’s not particularly hard to find as we were painting in Tooting but you will need a ladder to get it. You can’t really read the text on this but it features a heart with a bullet hole and the following line from one of Bon Jovi’s seminal 80’s hits:

‘Shot through the heart and you’re to blame, darling you give love a bad name…’

Pretty fitting for Valentine’s in my view…

BONUS FACT: Bon Jovi were the last band to play at the old Wembley stadium. So there.

Sometimes I wonder if everyone is unobservant…

It’s not very often that we here at id-iom strive to do something understated and somewhat minimal but that was entirely what we were aiming for with this piece. Have we succeeded? Who knows? It’s certainly less cluttered than our usual technique of throwing as much paint at the background as possible. Anyway, we decided that the metal shutters provided a nice textured background just as they were so threw up our stencil, coloured her in and then put up some additional text in a purposely small font which reads: ‘Sometimes I wonder is everyone if unobservant then I realise that at least you’re not’. Despite the fact I’ve just pointed it out to you I do wonder how many people will walk past this without ever bothering to read it. Well, the jokes on you sucker! Many thanks to Irony and the Real Art of Street Art for hooking us up!

Here’s looking at you…

I had some different coloured ‘gold’ leaf and frankly this picture was just an excuse to use it. There’s some blue leaf on the background, red leaf on her lips, silver leaf on her glasses and some gold leaf on her bikini. Obviously it’s tricky for someone with my sub-par photography skills to take a shot that shows the shiny leaf off to it’s best advantage but you’re going to have to trust me on the fact that it looks much better in real life. All shiny and glittery which appeals to my magpie instincts. She’ll be hitting the streets just as soon as I can find somewhere suitable for her. I wish her luck…

Shot through the heart and…

Bon Jovi once famously sang that they’d been shot through the heart and noted the fact that you were to blame. Well, short of the whole blaming you for it thing I thought I’d turn that sentiment into some art using the magic of stencils, spraypaint, gold (and red) leaf and a Dymo. Now she’s just about ready to hit the street as long as I can find somewhere suitable.

We’ve previously done an earworm and I thought it was about time to give it another go. The success or otherwise of this piece hinges on the fact that just about everyone is familiar with Bon Jovi’s ‘You give love a bad name’ and so I’ve done my best to try and get it playing unheeded in your brain. For no reason other than I can. It’s difficult to know how successful I’ll be but them’s the breaks…

The tears of a clown

The tears of a clown

The tears of a clown

I’m just not sure about clowns. There we were at a friend’s kid’s birthday party and everything was going great; the kids were happy, the parents were happy and all was well. That is until our host brought out the entertainment. It was a clown. A good for nothing happy-go-lucky clown and it was just too much for us to take. Before he could start his routine we took him to one side and carefully explained to him that he needed to reassess his life decisions and do something worthwhile with his life because he wasn’t happy, his mother wasn’t happy and we certainly weren’t happy. Anyway after about 2 minutes of talking to him he started to cry which the both of us took as a great achievement for us so went back to enjoying the party. Problem solved.

Murky Limenas

Murky Limenas

Murky Limenas

Now call me old fashioned but I like to be asked if I want ice or a piece of fruit in a drink I’m paying good money for. I always say yes to ice and no to fruit (just so you know). Who on earth thought that putting a slice of lime in a vodka and coke without asking was a good idea? C’mon, show yourself! I insist that this nonsense stop right now. At the moment my passive aggressive strategy for dealing with it is tutting, raising my eyebrows and then fishing the lime out with my fingers in a very undignified manner and tossing it onto the bar in full view of the drone who served me. Next time it happens I may have to escalate it to something a bit more physical. Murky limenas indeed…
