The other day we were doing a graffiti workshop where people were spray painting skateboard decks. To facilitate this we brought out our big bags of random stencils that we have cultivated over the years. As we were sorting them out before the workshop we came across two pieces stuck together. After a little needling, some swearing and the application of careful hands we managed to extract this thing of beauty from in between them. Two become one, as the Spice Girls famously sang.
Although it is now pretty much useless as a working stencil I think it would look good framed but then what do I know?
Legend has it that shortly after Crawley was made a borough in 1974 the newly anointed mayor was presented with a modified coat of arms and a piece of art – both bearing Crawley’s motto ‘I grow and I rejoice’ (which, as I’m sure we all know is a translation of a phrase from the Epistulae of Seneca the Younger). The coat of arms has always been on display at the Town Hall whilst the art disappeared shortly after it’s initial presentation in somewhat murky circumstances during a drunken pub fight.
After investing a significant amount of time and effort in research and archaeology id-iom is proud to announce the recovery of this historically important document. It was discovered stuffed down the back seat of a decaying Ford Cortina. The people of Crawley can now rejoice however as the the art will soon be reunited with the coat of arms and the prophecy that has long been foretold may now come to pass.

Now i’m sure we’ve all heard of the term ‘Golden Girl’ usually referring to a young woman who has become unusually successful at an early age or a favored youth, held in high esteem by others, and for whom there are high hopes. This golden girl’s name is actually Auram but prefers to go by ‘Dawn’. She has her own very successful range of ‘Golden Dawn’ cosmetics.
She is attempting to parlay this success into re-establishing the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an organization devoted to the study and practice of the occult, metaphysics, and paranormal activities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mainly because her great grandfather was one of the original founders. In my opinion it’s not the best reason to bring back a magical society in 2019, especially with all the success of Harry Potter. That said she’s the golden girl and not me…

For today’s piece I’ve appropriated a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was a 19th century German philosopher who produced many scholarly articles. I think his ‘best weapon’ quote is bang on the money but it’s tricky to be sure how impressed he’d be with my creation or whether he’d take umbrage with my use of his quote. I guess we’ll never know…
With the frenetic pace of modern day life it seems that everyone is always in a rush to be getting along to some other place. Almost like whatever destination you’re currently at is just a stepping stone to some other, better place. Which is surely a folly. Sometimes it’s nice to just stop what you’re doing and appreciate the moment. Or, as Ferris Bueller put it ‘Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.’ So there.
Made using spraypaint, stencils, text messages from my phone and some water droplets shamelessly stolen from MyDogSighs (and then inexplicably turned upside down) then affixed to a wall with one way security screws. Good luck getting that off.

For throwback Thursday we’re going for our 1m x 1m Brixton Monopoly commission from a few years back. I was pretty pleased with the final result – especially considering how long it managed to take. After a load of emails back and forth we came up with a finished design which incorporated elements from various international editions of Monopoly, some invented elements and a load of place names from around Brixton which had significance to the client. As they live near to us all the locations (including Billa’s 24hr booze and Pizza Man) are somewhat familiar to me too…
Despite the fact they are known to me many spaces on the board are undoubtedly unfamiliar to just about everyone else. If, however, you do happen to be know all the place names and are particularly eagle-eyed you may even notice that we even arranged the squares so that they are grouped together logically (i.e by location and/or function) and the board follows a circuit from locations at the bottom of Brixton up to the top of Brixton Hill.
Tabitha has always wanted a rich boyfriend and a fancy house and she’s now finally achieved her goals. Just look at her face. She’s always been a little hoity toity but now she’s like the cat that got to swim in the cream. The things she’s had to do to get to this position however consists of a very long list of things she’s unlikely to ever talk about. Things your average person wouldn’t ever consider doing. Especially for such material gains as a rich boyfriend and a nice house. But Tabitha has other plans…

May 20th is World Bee Day and on this day in 1734 Anton Jansa, the pioneer of beekeeping was born. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators in the ecosystem.
That’s important because a dwindling global bee population can only be bad news for puny humans as the bees pollinate an awful lot of the crops and flowers that we depend on for food. Without them we are somewhat doomed so it’s probably best if we take a bit better care of our little insect cousins and make sure they can continue doing their job.
As a big bonus, they also know how to make honey. Without that we’d be left with wasp gravy and you wouldn’t want that on your morning toast.
The stigma against male pole dancing is a real and worrisome fact for all those involved. That’s why instead of hiring out dance studios it has now moved into a thriving underground scene where they meet at secret locations in various cities throughout the world for clandestine dance offs.
I didn’t actually get to see any action as it was the middle of the day when I took this photo but I now know what I’m doing next Friday…
