The Mousetrap

Recently my washing machine broke down so I had to use the local laundrette to wash my clothes. Never having used one before I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I’m certainly sure that what I did witness was not what you would call the norm. 

When I walked in a couldn’t see a soul until I walked around the first bank of machines, to my surprise I caught this lady sitting on a washing machine writhing about, legs akimbo, whimpering to herself. My first thought was this was some reenactment of the famous scene from ‘When Harry met Sally’ but as I looked closer I could see the tail of some small rodent sticking out the bottom of her trouser leg. To say I was shocked would be an understatement, I dropped my washing and ran as fast as my legs could take me from the place and left her to deal with the situation herself. Now I know it’s not the most chivalrous response one could have but I just felt the fact that I was wearing shorts was enough of a reason to high tail it out of there in case it came at me with its pointed snout, small rounded ears and pink scaly tail. I certainly wasn’t going to be caught in this little fellas well thought out trap…

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

I’m sure you’ve all heard the nursery rhyme about hanging around in the woods to spy on some bears having a hard-earned break from the stresses of everyday life. Well, there I was having a walk through the woods near the studio, clearing all those thoughts from my head, before starting on a new commission when to my surprise I realised I wasn’t alone.

I could hear this soft voice counting down from 100 somewhere off in the distance. My first thought that it was a bunch of children playing games but as I got nearer the voice just didn’t seem like that of a 7 year old. It was at both the same time aggressive and sweet. As I rounded a corner, there ahead of me was an incredibly large teddy bear with his paws over his eyes counting out aloud.

I quickly had a decision to make, do I make myself known to the bear or do I run off and hide and get involved with this game of hide and seek. I had to make my mind up quickly as he was just about to get into single figures. So with only a few seconds to spare I made a quick dash into the undergrowth to try and hide from this furry felt monster.

I have to admit I’m not very good at hide and seek so, of course, got found pretty much straight away and was, of course, the first person to be found.

As Tina Turner famously sang ‘What’s love got to do with it?‘. Quite a lot as it turns out as we’ve got representations of both modern day and prehistoric love in the one room. ‘How do you go about making this room complete?’ I hear you ask. Well, if there’s one thing love can do it’s to bring two previously unconnected hearts together – and that is exactly what we’ve done right here with the use of some red thread, making a tunnel of love if you will. The demolition crew are going to love this one when they finally arrive…

Forged by the Glitter of Gold

Ah, Friday again! Where have you been hiding all week? Fresh off the block today we have the rather large ‘Forged by the Glitter of Gold’ which comes in at an impressive 100 x 70cm. Frankly, being forged by the glitter of anything is pretty good in my book but to be forged by the glitter of gold is surely top shelf all the way.

The title comes from an early 20th Century rag time song which i happened to find in a box of stuff from my Grandma. It’s a shame I can’t play the piano as i’d love to have a little rattle on the old ebony and ivories of ‘Forged by the Glitter of Gold’ as with a title like that it has to be a bobby belter of a song. That said i don’t have a piano at home so i’d have to find one in a pub somewhere nearby and give all their customers something that they had never heard before. Maybe something like this. In fact this guy is probably a little to good for me.

They Came From Vancouver

This was a commission piece done on completion of our patented id-iom questionnaire. It’s always fun doing the questionnaire based commissions as you have to come up with a great idea based solely on their responses of the applicant. The more information they give you the better the piece will be (probably!)

This one is on a 1m x 1m canvas and although looks like it’s stencilled is actually painted using acrylics. As the person who commissioned this piece was from Vancouver we thought that a good place to start (the skyline is the Vancouver skyline). Once you get a good idea you just have to roll with it and hope the client likes it. Thankfully they did in this case so it was all good.
