Insect Week day 3 and we’re back to Ladybirds – which are funny little things. In English they’ve been called ladybird, ladybug, lady beetle, lady clock, lady cow and lady fly. Apparently the name references the fact that the ladybird is red and so was the Virgin Mary’s dress when pictured in the Middle Ages. But that’s not what today’s mural is all about.
Today’s tale is a story as old as time, ladybird loves leaf but unfortunately that love is not reciprocated. An epic chronicle of love, longing, hunger, revenge and everything in between that spans the generations. Imagine Game of Thrones with ladybirds and you’re pretty much there. No one is getting out alive. That’s all I’ve got apart from this lovely mural but you’ve got to admit it would make a good show…
It’s day 2 of Insect Week here at id-iom and today it’s the turn of the UK’s largest beetle – the mighty stag beetle. It is now accepted that stag beetles, whilst of an interesting design, are harmless to humans – but it didn’t always be this way. According to British folklore they were capable of summoning thunder and lightning and even flew around with hot coals in their jaws setting fire to buildings! Now if that isn’t slander right there then I don’t know what is. It’s downright rude. In an effort to rectify this we’ve started legal proceedings against British folklore on behalf of all stag beetles. Until then all we’ve got to hold your attention is a picture of a very regal looking stag beetle called Gatsby.

Just like an old school 12″ record today’s piece has 2 sides and you can flip between the two to your hearts content depending on your mood. It also appears to be based on the colour orange. I know not why. It’s a nice colour.
Side 1 features a disembodied tiger’s head floating in the air something akin to Damien Hirst’s shark. Except it’s not real and it’s got some cool Adidas style palette stripes in the background. He’s just chilling.
Side 2 features one of our demotivational posters. ‘FRANK! Just let it be!’ is a common enough refrain heard up and down the country on a Friday night. The Beatles even famously sang a song about it where the mantra of ‘Let it be’ is repeated many times. Sometimes it’s just not that easy though…

Poet Mouse knows it was National Poety Day just the other day but he doesn’t care right at the moment. Despite the fact Poet Mouse has a gargantuan lexicon and a great knowledge of poetry both contemporary and classic he is still subject to the same earthly needs as anyone else. And when he gets hungry he gets cranky. Here we can see he has eschewed the lofty world of words to let rip with the Mouse for something like ‘snack time!’ (which doesn’t translate well into English) as he spots a tasty beetle to assuage his seemingly bottomless hunger…
The pink room at the top of House of Pain(t) is currently the emptiest in terms of work we’ve done (probably because of the number of stairs you have to climb to reach the top of the house) but we have still have a few days left before demolition so we’ll hopefully get this room a little more completed before the wrecking ball moves in…
