We were commissioned to produce a 1m x 1m canvas for a very discerning and influential couple for their new house (seriously, they’re the power couple behind one of the UK’s biggest soaps). The canvas was to be based on the song ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ by Shuggie Otis. It’s a great song and you really should give it a listen. With such fine pedigree to work with we knocked out some designs lickety-split and that was when it all really began…
This large commission now has the dubious distinction of being the picture that has taken the longest time from conception to completion than anything else we’ve ever produced. We’re talking well over a year. When it was finally deemed complete my relief was palpable.
She’s on a 1m x 1m canvas and has been painted using all the paint we could find seemingly. She’s now safely ensconced in her new home in sunny Manchester. Let’s all wish her luck…
Warning! If you see this lady it’s best to steer clear. She may look like she has love in her eyes but she’s not what she appears to be. Whilst she looks like butter wouldn’t melt she is, in fact, the modern reincarnation of the ancient Norse deity Odin. She no longer has her ravens but instead has two new birds to whisper in her ear who are the incarnations of Huginn and Muginn – Odin’s messengers and spies. Exactly what the man sticking his tongue out and the other gentleman with the ‘Bugger! Wrong picture again’ sign are meant to mean is open to interpretation but there is surely some reason for them being there. What is it all meant to mean?
As you can probably tell by the fact she has a kingfisher nestled on her shoulder and two lovely little hummingbirds racing to taste the nectar of the blossoming lily she’s leaning in to sniff this lady is at one with nature. She has communed with her environment and found that she is now so in tune with her biorhythms and the natural cycle of life that she can talk with the animals just like Dr Doolittle. I’m only joking. She took some pretty strong acid about an hour ago and now thinks exclusively in smells and colours and can, as far as she’s concerned, converse with the imaginary birds and flowers that are crowding round her. Also, she thinks she’s leaning in to sniff the flower like Michael Jackson with his anti-gravity lean in the Smooth Criminal video. That’s just how muddled she is. I guess the moral of the story is that things aren’t always what they seem. Or something like that.
She’s was made using the magic of acrylic paint, paint pen, stickers and charcoal on a large (A1 size) bit of coloured paper. She will surely look magnificent when framed up. If you’re interested drop us a line…
