Life Safety Begins Here

id-iom is very much a caring partnership. Just last week the younger member of id-iom had his birthday and I thought to produce a very thoughtful gift for him. I should probably point out that he’s also diabetic. Sometimes not a very responsible one who has ended up in hospital on a number of occasions. Given that proclivity I thought a gentle reminder of good practice may well be in order. After I’d presented it to him we looked at the calendar and, at the time of writing the numbers, he had avoided a hospitalisation incident for 534 days. Good work. Let’s keep it up. Accidents are avoidable…

Made using the magic of stencils and spraypaint on a newly acquitted A2 blackboard. A slightly macabre but well intended must have for the hossie hound in your life…

Cheers

Hey Jude!

Hey Jude!

Hmmmm….. What does a gritty urban art duo do for a one year old’s birthday present? Well, after worrying for a while about exactly what you can and can’t do for a baby this is the end result. There was a lot of time spent thinking about whether we were doing something kid friendly or something that maybe he’d appreciate when he’s older and finally settled on this after finding a piece of glass to work on in the studio that seemed to provide some inspiration.

With a name like Jude it was hard to avoid the Beatles reference so we decided to get the opening notes from ‘Hey Jude’ on there along with his name and a little monkey logo (they’re all cheeky little monkeys aren’t they?) Cutting musical notes correctly at a small size however is probably not something I’ll be doing again. The main thing about painting on the back of the glass is remembering that everything has to be done in reverse – which can sometimes be a little frustrating as you can’t change things after you’ve done them if you have some mid piece brainwave. Oh well, there’s always next time…

Bark or Bite?

Bark or Bite?

We sold another version of this picture a short while ago and then a friend got in touch saying she’d failed in her attempt to snaffle it on eBay and could she commission another from us. As it’s her birthday very shortly we sent it along as a gift in lieu of the fact that we will be unable to attend. So ‘Happy Birthday!’ You know who you are…

It’s based on an old Celtic design that was in a book which was lying around in our dearly departed studio. This was one of several designs that I was thinking of getting it done as a tattoo so I thought I’d see how it looked before I’d commit ink to skin. As i’m a fickle beast I have since changed my mind and will, in fact, be going for a photorealistic teal duck. Probably. Maybe this one will get a look in next time…

Eye of the Tiger

Eye of the Tiger

Occasionally we are commissioned to produce something which isn’t much like our usual output and today’s offering is a good example. A while ago we were asked to come up a picture for a 40th birthday present and I’d like to think we finally managed to succeed with our off-the-wall offering of ‘Grandad, a bohemian grenade especially for you!

So when we were asked to do something for a 30th birthday we thought we’d have a little check of the interweb to see what was no.1 on their birthday. Lo and behold it was Survivor’sEye of the Tiger‘ so with such a good birth tune we thought it prudent to keep things simple. With our time done and our chances taken we purchased the 12″ vinyl version from Ebay and it was then just a simple matter of cutting a stencil for the dedication then getting it passed to our framer. My favourite touch on the sleeve design is the fact the band are reflected in the tiger’s eye. Hang tough and stay hungry.

We are 1

We are 1

Just over a year ago we did some work for a new bar opening in Brixton called the Electric Social. To promote the bar’s 1st birthday (how time flies!) we were asked to go out and do a small street campaign in the surrounding areas with a single layer stencil and some chalk paint (I love chalk paint by the way). So we put on some sturdy walking boots and hit the road for a pleasing stroll whilst at the same time spraying up the pavement near the likes of bus stops, crossings and bins where people usually slow down their pace a little so there is all the more chance for them to notice a little subversive advertising. Thankfully all went well and although we couldn’t make it to the actual birthday party we heard that it was also a massive success with one of their busiest night to date. Happy Birthday sunshine!!

Cheers
