‘When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do, is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue’ sang Phil Collins on his 1988 track ‘A groovy kind of love’. It would seem this girl hasn’t seen Phil in quite some time then. Given the somewhat vacant look in her eyes it may be some time yet before she claps eyes on the great man.
As an aside I dearly hope putting those lyrics above has started an earworm for you. I know it has for me…
Cheers

Title: When I’m feeling blue
Materials: Paint pen, acrylic and spraypaint
Size: A3
I thought I’d managed to exorcise Phil Collins from my thoughts at least temporarily but today’s piece just couldn’t help itself. Today I’m juxtaposing Phil’s out of context quote which reveals that it wasn’t 5 star all the way when touring in Europe with his band with a ciggy smoking Hamar tribeswoman against. I’m assuming this quote was probably some time in the 80’s. You may have been down but you were never out Phil.
Once you’ve liberally sprinkled in a couple of pilfered logos in and given it a pink and white background then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…
With no discernible use for the first one of these I cut I thought ‘these look cool, I think I’ll do some more’ so set about doing exactly that. They’re all mini lasercuts of our Phil Collins ‘No Context Required’ pieces and feature out of context Phil Collins quotes combined with various other bits of frippery – logo’s, celebrities and the like. What exactly they are for or indeed can be used for I’m not entirely sure but as doodah’s go they’re sure pretty. I’ve thought about painting them but they’re entirely too small for such shenanigans so they are what they are. They can be grasped comfortably in one hand. That much can definitely be said about them. Beyond that I’m not so sure.
Turning Phil Collins quotes into art in order to try and exorcise him from my thoughts was my initial aim with this series but it now seems to have taken on a life of its own. Today’s ‘No Context Required’ piece sees Phil’s somewhat philosophical quote about wishing you were somebody else collocated with Games of Thrones star Sophie Turner (who plays Sansa Stark). She’s not in character in this design but I’ve helpfully given a hint to her character with her mash-up t-shirt featuring the Direwolf logo from the House of Stark in Game of Thrones and the Stark Industries logo from Marvel’s Iron Man.
Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few more pilfered logos into the quote and adorned it with a delightful grey & blue background then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…
If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that our ‘Phil Collins – No Context Required’ pieces have burgeoned into something of an ongoing series and they aren’t finished just yet. The initial aim was to present Phil Collins quotes in new and unusual ways in order to try and exorcise him from my thoughts but now it seems I simply can’t help myself.
Today’s piece juxtaposes a post-workout Darth Vader with Phil’s quote about a public separation and hiding in hotel lobbies. I like the way Darth seems like he’s a bit fed up with it all and the quote could be about him. The internet was not very forthcoming about who Phil was actually speaking about in this quote and as he’s been married a few times it’s tricky to be sure.
Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and adorned it with a spanky blue & white background then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…
Frankly I think I’ve nailed today’s ‘No Context Required’ piece – the main aim of which is to present Phil Collins quotes in new and unusual ways in order to try and exorcise him from my thoughts. If you were a male child in the 80’s you could hardly have missed Sam Fox and her undoubted charms. I’ve collocated her coquettish pose with Phil’s quote equating songwriting to child rearing and how disappointing the end result can be. Given Sam’s own glittering music career – and who can forget her 1986 classic ‘touch me (I want your body) – I thought Phil’s quote was particularly fitting. So there you have it.
Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and adorned it with a grey background with some hearts then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…
Who’d a thunk it? Before he donated it to a Texas museum back in 2014 Phil Collins had the largest collection of Alamo memorabilia in private hands including Davy Crockett’s fringed bullet pouch and Jim Bowie’s legendary knife. Apparently he’d been obsessed with the Battle of the Alamo since watching something about Davy Crockett on TV when he was a kid and then indulged himself once he’d made some moolah as an adult. Today’s out of context quote is Collins’ reply to reports belittling him for his supposed belief that he was at the Alamo in another life.
Anyway, I’ve juxtaposed his quote with a wide eyed young lady who looks a bit like a clown. Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and adorned it with a green & yellow background then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…
I’ve used one of the most familiar faces on British TV to accompany today’s quote by Phil Collins to really bang home the out of context nature of his words. Just to warn you I’m going to use the word ‘juxtapose’ again. That’s twice in two days. There just isn’t another suitable word. Anyway, so I’m juxtaposing national treasure Holly Willoughby against Phil’s out of context quote which displays his surprised reaction at learning he’d peaked and was already on a downward spiral of popularity. Unlucky Phil. I’m assuming this quote was probably some time in the 90’s. You may have been down but you were never out Phil. It seems you’d already taken up residence in my thoughts. Hopefully my attempts to exorcise you by art will be successful.

Bonus fact: I’ve managed to hide a coded swear word/phrase in this picture. Win.
Another day, another Phil Collins inspired piece. Today’s out of context quote from Phil is him bemoaning his success and potential overexposure in his heyday in the 80’s and realising how it could lead to something of a backlash. I’ve juxtaposed his quote with a bodybuilder with a cat’s head. Mainly because I can but also because it removes the quote so far from context that it takes it to another dimension all together – which appeals to me hugely. Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and given it a yellow and grey background then you’ve got another successful ‘No context required’ piece.

With Phil Collins regularly invading my thoughts for no fathomable reason I thought the best way to exorcise the demon, so to speak, was to let the genie out of the bottle and give some Phil inspired designs a go. It turns out some of his quotes, when taken out of context, have led to a bit of a design goldmine and today’s piece is my initial effort.
Phil is well aware he’s a caricature but what he doesn’t know is that he’s been lasercut on wood and then hand coloured and now stands proud at 53 x 36cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested. I think it’s safe to say that you can expect more in the same vein in the days to come. They get a bit weirder…
As a bonus for the eagle eyed viewers out there – how many of my out of context band references that I’ve shoehorned into the picture can you find?
