We’ve already written a post about our time in Blackpool for Sand, Sea & Spray last weekend but we thought we’d do a little update on the piece as we had a little extra work on our piece done on the Saturday when My Dog Sighs popped over and added one of his great looking eyes to our lovely looking lady. He also managed to paint a few other bits and bobs down the same alley so if you’re in the neighbourhood it’s well worth a look.

Cheers

Taking the Cure – Sand, Sea & Spray 2013 Blackpool

Last year when we went to Blackpool for Sand, Sea & Spray we had to work in the driving rain all day (but still managed to get a couple of pieces done) and despite the weatherman’s warnings that this year was going to be pretty similar we set off from London with hope in our hearts. This being the UK however our dreams were soon to be shattered. Despite waking to sunshine it soon became clear that was not going to be the order of the day and so after finding our billboard spot on the Winter Gardens we set to work in a steady drizzle. Soon this escalated to full blown torrential rain that stopped play for a while as we were forced to wait it out in a doorway. From there on in for the rest of the day it was a cycle of rain, a snatch of sunshine and then more rain. We had to get finished in a day however as we had a wedding to attend on Saturday otherwise a strategic retreat to the nearest hostelry would have been in order.

During the afternoon My Dog Sighs turned up and we all agreed that the addition of some of his eyes on our lady would definitely be a good thing so he added them on Saturday (in glorious sunshine i hasten to add) – and surely she looks good with her one real looking eye and one of our eyes? The title and text of ‘Taking the cure’ refers to the Victorian pastime of coming to Blackpool to bathe in the sea as it supposedly had healing qualities.

Once we’d finished and dried off a little we went to have a quick beer, see what the Q&A session was like and catch up with whoever was about. All in all a good day out and we’d just like to extend our thanks to the S,S&S team who were all very helpful and accommodating.

Cheers

Southsea Head Jam – id-iom x My Dog Sighs x Korp Round 2!

On Monday we showed you round 1 of our collaboration with MyDogSighs and today we jump on in to Round 2 with the added inclusion of Korp. This piece had no planning whatsoever as we weren’t originally even meant to be painting that wall. Sadly, Snik was unable to make it down to Southsea which meant that we had an even bigger space to fill. Not being ones to shirk our responsibility when it comes to applying paint to a wall we jumped in enthusiastically. It started innocently enough as a quick play with a can on this spare wall with no intention of actually using it for the basis of a piece but on one occasion whilst I was up sitting on the roof basking in the sun MyDog decided to come along with the other half of id-iom to use what was there for another off the cuff collaboration wall. This was probably one of my favourite parts of the day due to the fact that it was a free for all wall with an anything goes attitude. Win all round.

Southsea Head Jam – id-iom V My Dog Sighs Round 1!

Over the weekend we popped down to Southsea for a little paint jam organised by My Dog Sighs. On the drive down the weather improved and we arrived in glorious sunshine without a cloud in the sky. It only took us about an hour and a half in the id-iomobile and due to the other half of id-iom’s echolocation skills we found where we were meant to paint straight away. Along with us and MyDog we also had the illustrious company of Miss Wah Wah, Korp and Process Smith. Snik was due down but didn’t manage to make it due to car troubles.

We had the courtyard area to fill in a day and we were a man down so we all just had to work that little bit harder. We were very well looked after by the Strong Island crew who kept plying us with beer and food. What more could we have asked for? As the day progressed we started getting attempting to tie it all together and had a load of fun collaboration with Mydog on sorting the backgrounds out and he also painted the eyes in on one of our ladies. For no better reason other than we could we decided to give her a glass eye.

Cheers

Dead Dog Squad

Dead Dog Squad

Dead Dog Squad

Have you ever heard of ‘The Dead Dog Squad’? I would imagine that you’ve never heard of them but let me assure you they do actually exist, they are very much real and are also very very good at their job. If you don’t know what they do then I’m certainly not at liberty to tell you. But you can rest assured their job is vital to your continued existence although you’ll never know it. The man in the picture is a retired member of the team and that’s the only way i could get to paint him. I probably shouldn’t be telling you about it but i’m sure i’ll be fine. Maybe.

Bark or Bite?

Bark or Bite?

We sold another version of this picture a short while ago and then a friend got in touch saying she’d failed in her attempt to snaffle it on eBay and could she commission another from us. As it’s her birthday very shortly we sent it along as a gift in lieu of the fact that we will be unable to attend. So ‘Happy Birthday!’ You know who you are…

It’s based on an old Celtic design that was in a book which was lying around in our dearly departed studio. This was one of several designs that I was thinking of getting it done as a tattoo so I thought I’d see how it looked before I’d commit ink to skin. As i’m a fickle beast I have since changed my mind and will, in fact, be going for a photorealistic teal duck. Probably. Maybe this one will get a look in next time…

Love don’t live here anymore

Love don’t live here anymore

So there I was minding my own business and quietly walking down the street when I see an abandoned mattress laying against the park railings. I’m sure it’s not the same for everyone  but I have always had a compulsion to write ‘Love don’t live here anymore’ on an abandoned mattress. It just seems so fitting. Abandoned mattresses aren’t the most common item of street furniture but whenever I’ve seen them they are either nowhere near home or I don’t have any paint on me. Until today.

As this was being discussed with the other half of id-iom we came up with the notion that this one is too obvious and must have been done before elsewhere. A quick internet search hasn’t revealed anything but I think I came up with it myself and i’m sticking to that. It is possible however that I have just subconsciously stolen the idea and then passed it off in my brain as my own. Who knows?

King Dog and the Angels

King Dog and the Angels

King Dog and the Angels

When we started working upstairs at the House of Pain(t) we invited a couple of friends along to help out. In one of the upstairs rooms Perspicere went to work doing a thread piece that my poor photography skills just don’t do justice to as it’s pretty elaborate and nebulous (it’s the thinner dark thread you can just about make out in the background). He even came back the next week to try and get it completed but then had to leave early due to a small domestic emergency. After doing pretty much all the rest of the house we had his not-quite-completed room to contend with. As there were so many nails in the walls and thread all over the place the only thing we could really do was continue his work to some degree.

So we decided to make it some kind of  angel and ‘laser’ protected shrine to a strange canine king that is looking benignly down on a pair of kissing angels. It sounds odd now I’ve written it down but it seemed the only course of action we could reasonably take at that time.  You have to use your imagination a little to pretend the red threads are laser beams protecting the shrine but i must stress that the effect is really much better if you see it in person (which you can’t). The angels had been lurking in the basement for some project that never came to pass and they just took up too much space to be transported onwards with us. I hope they’re happy.

Did you know Elvis had an identical twin?

Well, did you? I certainly didn’t until I started having to do a little Elvis research on the weekend. It’s funny the little things you remember isn’t it.

All i want for my birthday is a grey staffy. Well now you've got one!

Oh me oh my it's only the Elvis wardrobe!

Elvis has now left the building!

There I was on the weekend enjoying a beverage in the local hostelry when we had a call out of the blue asking if we could pull out our best ‘Changing Rooms‘ impression to help prepare for a new teenage bedroom which, after being constructed in secrecy whilst he was at school yesterday, would be ready for his birthday celebrations when he got back. After a little deliberation we agreed and this much we knew – it had to feature Elvis, a grey staffy dog and there was a little water damage to the wallpaper (from a shower upstairs) which had to have a little makeover. We only had a couple of days to prepare and then had to get it all done in the time it would take him to go to school and back…

The footballer commission

Through a friend who had one of our pieces we were asked to do a commission for a professional footballer. After filling out our patented questionnaire (to be found under ‘downloads’ on our website) and getting it back to us we set to work. After many a false start and designs that we couldn’t agree on we came up with the idea for ‘No Loitering’.

As ‘loiter’ was one of his favourite words we thought we could use that along with a couple of other points which were brought up in the questionnaire to create something brand spanking new for him. As ever, the most nerve-racking part is just when you are about to unveil it but fortunately this seemed to go down just fine (as i have now become something of an expert in trying to decipher people’s faces when you present them with their unseen commission!)

Anyway , the end result can be seen below…
