Lost and found

As an artist who can let their imagination get the best of them, it’s no surprise that sometimes things can get out of hand…

Many months ago now, possibly even years ago, I was working on this painting when an errant idea popped into my head which managed to satisfy the Muse and derail my entire train of thought. Needless to say I needed to please the Muse which meant me putting this canvas aside to work on my shiny new idea.  

There it lay until just recently whilst having a rummage around for an entirely unrelated item and it appears in my hands. For now, I’ve got no idea where I was heading with this piece so any suggestions would be welcome. Otherwise I’ll just have to wait until the Muse has finished with Margaret, aged 9 from Dumfries, who has some Christmas based art homework to finish for tomorrow…

Pamela had been having strange dreams. She dreamed of being imprisoned. She dreamed of the bangs of an auctioneer’s gavel and of her being bought and sold like any other commodity. She dreamed of being free like the birds she would see sitting on the wire from the electricity pylon outside her window. Behind all this was the nagging doubt that something was wrong. She just couldn’t put her finger on it…

Pamela was, of course, the first fully functioning AI to be minted as an NFT and put on the blockchain. What will become of her? Only time will tell…

Owning one’s mistakes

There I was painting away and I thought I had it! Then I lost it. Then I managed to find it again before taking it too far and then suddenly I was looking at an absolute mess of a picture. Normally I would throw a big hissy fit and rip it up or scrawl over it like some scene out of soap when someone is going a little off the rails- but that wasn’t to be the case.

I made a post on social media about my situation and I got some words of encouragement which made me reassess the picture and carry on, although I thought it something of a loss leader at this point.

Anyway, I’m still not particularly happy with it but just because I painted something I didn’t like doesn’t mean its worthless. We all deserve a second chance. For one I’m learning and beginning to own my mistakes. I just hope the next one doesn’t make me pull what little hair remains…

Skull slider

Heed my warning!! Ignore the polka dots in the background!

They are there to try to induce some sort of cognitive dissonance in the viewer so that they are sick all over themselves whilst look at this guys face – which he says is about to slide off his skull! I’m not entirely sure if that’s really the case as the only time I’ve ever heard  this happen is when you either have to much plastic surgery on any given weekend or when you open the Ark of the Covenant. Either way he sure does have an odd head.

Full Intention – America (found record redesign)

 

Found record redesign – AFTER

So this is the second of my cover redesigns for some 12″ records I found abandoned. I just had to give them a good home. At least temporarily before I repainted them and placed them back on the streets. With this one it originally looked something like this:

But now has some extra 3D effect linework in there. My skills are so seamless that my girlfriend thought that my update was the original cover. Until i put the ‘red’, ‘white’ and ‘blue’ lettering on there. The ‘white’ lets me down somewhat although I think the overall effect still works nicely. Anyway best of luck in finding it but we’ll update when they’re all out and about…

Mother – I’m all funked up (found record re-design)

You want serendipity? I’ll give you serendipity. Although you may need a little background before it seems all that serendipitous. I’ve always loved records and have collected them on and off since I was about 16. I’ve also always been a womble and will pick up interesting things in my travels and take them home (usually to paint on). So what was I meant to do when I rounded a corner near my house and came across an armful of abandoned 12″ records lying by a bin. It was like seeing a load of forsaken kittens lying in the street. I had no choice but to scoop them up and head on my way feeling ever so slightly smug about the whole thing. While I was having a quick check through them (which revealed that they were largely mid 90’s dance) I thought I’d perhaps re-design the covers and then put them back out on the street.

So here’s the first of my redesigns. It was initially this:

But is now the marvel you see at the top. I’ve taken it quite literally and used a stencil of my own mum. Ha! That will hopefully fox someone when it gets back out on the street…

Error 404: Advert not found

With the somewhat gusty weather we’ve had recently this billboard has managed to peel itself naked. And that, of course, is quite the affront to any self-respecting urban artist. So with our woolen thinking caps pulled down firmly on to our respective heads, we came up with a quick joke on the idea of the advert not being there.

We presumed the matter to be time sensitive as we weren’t sure when the ad man would be back to shove more tasteless shots of half naked women down our gullet so quickly set to work cutting a stencil. This is probably the reason why its so small compared to the actual billboard or at least that’s the story we’re sticking to. It was definitely nothing to do with the fact it was measured ‘by eye’…

Being Schooled

Over the years I’ve become quite the collector of found photographs, particularly passport shots (it’s surprising how many you find when looking for them). Now, whilst the photo in the picture isn’t a passport photo I did pick it up on my travels as I absolutely loved it. Just look the way the pair of them seem relaxed yet at the same time rather hostile. So after having the photo by my computer for quite a while I eventually decided to use it on a piece that had been forming in my head. Whenever I looked at the photo two things always came to mind, the first being the scene in Star Wars in the Mos Eisley cantina:

[Ponda Baba gives Luke a rough shove and starts yelling at Luke in an alien language which Luke doesn’t understand]

Dr. Evazan: [explaining] He doesn’t like you.

Luke: Sorry.

Dr. Evazan: [grabbing Luke] *I* don’t like you either. You just watch yourself. We’re wanted men. I have the death sentence on twelve systems.

Luke: I’ll be careful.

Dr. Evazan: You’ll be dead!

Obi-Wan: [intervening] This little one’s not worth the effort. Come, let me get you something.

[Dr. Evazan shoves Luke across the room and pulls out a blaster]

Bartender: No blasters! No blasters!

[Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber, killing Dr. Evazan and severing Ponda Baba’s arm]

The other is a friends favourite insult of ‘Go fuck yourself’ mainly because he looks like the guy sitting back taking it easy in the photo even if the guy does look considerably older. Eventually I decided on the second scenario for the inspiration for the piece.
