Eva had quite a different lockdown to the rest of us. Rather than just collect her furlough money and play Xbox for months she decided to better herself. Through some decidedly dodgy forums she found a place in Russia that would help you to improve your mental skills in 3 months or your money back. And we’re not talking Sudoku or crosswords here we’re talking telepathy, psionic abilities and telekinesis.
Now she could move objects with her mind and bend others to her will and she was really quite looking forward to her upcoming chat with her boss about pay and a possible promotion…
In reality Eva has been languishing in development hell for the last 3 years. She was started and never completed until recently the Muse gave me the nod to get this Eva finished. The application of some gold, some wavy black lines and some carefully placed splodges of black ink was all it took but I’ve found it’s better not to rush these things.
Now i’m sure we’ve all heard of the term ‘Golden Girl’ usually referring to a young woman who has become unusually successful at an early age or a favored youth, held in high esteem by others, and for whom there are high hopes. This golden girl’s name is actually Auram but prefers to go by ‘Dawn’. She has her own very successful range of ‘Golden Dawn’ cosmetics.
She is attempting to parlay this success into re-establishing the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an organization devoted to the study and practice of the occult, metaphysics, and paranormal activities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mainly because her great grandfather was one of the original founders. In my opinion it’s not the best reason to bring back a magical society in 2019, especially with all the success of Harry Potter. That said she’s the golden girl and not me…
It is A2 in size and made using spray paint, acrylic, paint pen and charcoal.
It is said that if you gaze at the sunset and squint just so you can see Mount Olympus – home to the entire pantheon of Greek gods. Trying to achieve this so called ‘Golden Squint’ has led many a scholar to his doom but this lady seems to have nailed it without really trying. I wonder what she can see up there?

Well it would appear that I’m on something of a roll with 2 sided pictures. As with our previous one it’s on a 60 x 40cm wood panel and features laser engraving, stencils, spraypaint, paint pens, acrylic paint and laser cutouts. If that’s not enough I even managed to come up with my own patented industrial-looking hanging contraption from the hardware shop so it can be easily flipped to give your walls a new lease of life. How’s that for a win?
One side features a slightly aloof looking lady under an x-shaped logo for ‘The Golden Motto Series’ and the legend ‘People will stare. Make it worth their while.’ Which we all know is true. People are nosy and can’t help it. I guess it’s just the way we are. We love looking at just about anything be it out of the ordinary or not. Anyway, the thing I’m happiest about with this piece is managing to keep it pretty minimal (well, for us anyway) and restraining myself from adding more colour and embellishment. I’m happy with the result.
The other side was inspired by a quote from Nelson Mandela – ‘It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it’. It seems obvious but seem people seem to need that pointing out sometimes. I’ve taken him quite literally at his word on this one and so have a bemused looking lady holding the world in her hands with the stars and astral quotes providing a galactic background. Right on Nelson.
Vampires have been a popular culture phenomenon ever since Bram Stoker knocked out ‘Dracula’ in 1897. We’ve seen vampires in many guises but today I give you the definitive guide to how to spot a modern day urban vampire. By some standards it’s quite easy but you have to know what to look for.
‘Bats for hair’ is the first thing. As we all know, vampires are naturally bald but over time they’ve convinced squadrons of undead bats to cling to their scalps in some semblance of a hairpiece. They tend to have a glamour (or spell) that makes the beasts look just like a well tousled head of hair but if you squint just right you can see the little blighters scrabbling over each other for purchase or occassionally flying off to snatch a nearby fly.
The fact that vampires tend to smoke hemlock cigarettes is another giveaway. With a smell more acrid than burning tyres one hit will kill you in an instant but that doesn’t stop them passing them over for a toke to anyone stupid enough to ask what it is.
Finally, vampires love bling. And not just any one old bling. They believe that ancient gold artifacts posess the power of civilisations now gone. And the mythical Golden Fleece is the most revered of the lot. Here he’s had it spun into an actual fleece so he’ll be able to pass as normal a bit more easily whilst out and about. So there you go. Now you now.
As with all the pieces I’ve been doing recently he’s a bit of mixed media magic featuring some spraypaint, crystal resin, dymo tape and whatever else I was using.
