You had me at whagwan

Since living in Brixton I’ve become enamoured with the phrase ‘Whagwan’. For the uninitiated, the phrase means ‘what’s going on’ in Jamaican Patois. The spelling can vary but the meaning doesn’t change. Once I’d combined that with a nice little romantic statement and a bit of traditional Claddagh ring design, hey presto, I had a fully formed idea that became this little declaration of love for Brixton.

Weather depending she’ll be hitting the streets at some point today so if you’re in the SW2 area keep your eyes peeled…

Brixton – You had me at whagwan…

We’ve done a larger on street version of this before but someone asked about the possibility of a canvas version and I jumped in and cut the stencil but the deal then didn’t progress. I came across the stencil again whilst having a tidy up and had a canvas handy so thought I may as well complete it.

Anyway, once I’d combined that with a nice little romantic statement and a bit of traditional Claddagh ring design, hey presto, I had this little declaration of love for Brixton. Then it was just a matter of adding it to the messy ‘graffiti wall’ style background and, by jingo, you’ve got it!

Anyway, once I’d combined that with a nice little romantic statement, hey presto, I had a fully formed idea that, after a little further work, became this little declaration of love. It’s on A3 paper and is made using the magic of stencils and spraypaint.

Wha’ Gwan? uncovered!

Wha’ Gwan?

Today’s offering is a little bit of graffiti archaeology. We have had a few different versions of this ‘Wha Gwan?‘ design up on the blog before but this one I particularly like as over time it had disappeared under layer upon layer of posters for bashment nights, circuses and fairs and local theatre productions but once they had become too numerous they were cleared away and I’m proud to see that our little paste up was still clinging tenaciously to the side of the metal box and looking largely unharmed.

Wha gwan ladies?

First there was the road sign, then came the rasta version commission and finally we have one for the ladies. This commission features more feminine colours, different stencils and the addition of 3 coloured glitters! It would appear that the ladies know wha gwan pon da floor after all. Rise up!

Wha’ Gwan?

After our first ‘Wha Gwan?’ piece was done on a found sign and we were commissioned to recreate it on paper for someone so set to work cleaning the image up a little and adding a little colour. For the uninitiated, the phrase ‘Wha gwan’ (whaa gwaan) means ‘what’s going on’ in Jamaican Patois. The spelling varies but the meaning does not change. As we live in Brixton this is not an unusual phrase to hear around the place.

As with our other version I have included a small Lion of Judah motif on there as a nod to Haile Selassie (we have cut a stencil of him before as part of our celebrity heads series – see here).
