Phil Collins – No Context Required

I’ve used one of the most familiar faces on British TV to accompany today’s quote by Phil Collins to really bang home the out of context nature of his words. Just to warn you I’m going to use the word ‘juxtapose’ again. That’s twice in two days. There just isn’t another suitable word. Anyway, so I’m juxtaposing national treasure Holly Willoughby against Phil’s out of context quote which displays his surprised reaction at learning he’d peaked and was already on a downward spiral of popularity. Unlucky Phil. I’m assuming this quote was probably some time in the 90’s. You may have been down but you were never out Phil. It seems you’d already taken up residence in my thoughts. Hopefully my attempts to exorcise you by art will be successful.

Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and given it a pink and white background then you’re good to go with another successful ‘No context required’ piece. It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…

Bonus fact: I’ve managed to hide a coded swear word/phrase in this picture. Win.

Phil Collins – No Context Required

Another day, another Phil Collins inspired piece. Today’s out of context quote from Phil is him bemoaning his success and potential overexposure in his heyday in the 80’s and realising how it could lead to something of a backlash. I’ve juxtaposed his quote with a bodybuilder with a cat’s head. Mainly because I can but also because it removes the quote so far from context that it takes it to another dimension all together – which appeals to me hugely. Once you’ve liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and given it a yellow and grey background then you’ve got another successful ‘No context required’ piece.

It’s laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you’re interested…

Vladimir Putin – No Context Required

For the second of our ‘No Context Required’ designs here we have a quote from Vladimir Putin following an interesting bit of video where he kisses the stomach of a little boy whilst out and about in Russia somewhere. If you haven’t seen it then I suggest you put ‘Putin kiss boy’s stomach’ into Google and follow one of the links. To say it’s a bit weird is probably something of an understatement. Anyway this quote is what he had to say about the incident but once you combine it with the angry looking man bear you have another quality id-iom piece. It’s laser engraved on wood and stands proud at 39 x 26cm and even features an out of context Hello Kitty character and I’ve even robbed the Honest Burgers logo just to really mix it up. Drop us a line if you’re interested…

Just think of the exposure

Today’s piece is one for the artists out there. Unlike just aboutu any other professions I can think of there is some weird thing with artists where people seem to expect you to work for free on the basis that doing whatever job they’re suggesting would be good exposure for you. You try that with a plumber and I’m pretty sure what happens next.

Frankly, given that we like painting up big walls and signing them, we’re okay at gathering that precious exposure for ourselves. Anyway this picture depicts my face and general demeanour when anyone even mentions working for ‘exposure’, the crystal resin represents my tears and the little bird is telling us we’re chumps for even listening to such a proposal and to run away as swiftly as my little legs will carry me…

Fish Fingers: The Truth

WARNING: LIFE SPOILER AHEAD.

My life has been a lie. How can I right this colossal wrong? Can I speak to trading standards about the fact I’ve been mis-sold fish fingers my entire life. FISH DON’T HAVE FINGERS! It’s a fact. I’ve checked and double-checked. I even took up fishing for a while just to prove my point. So today’s piece is as much a public service announcement as it is art piece to vent my feelings on this most foul of lucifer’s lies. Fish do generally have teeth though. And this fish is, in fact, the pacu fish which is a close relative of the piranha and has teeth that look pretty much human-like. I’m not joking. Look up ‘pacu fish teeth’ if you don’t believe me.

As with all the pieces I’ve been doing recently he’s a bit of mixed media magic featuring some spraypaint, crystal resin, dymo tape and whatever else I was using.

Mama never said it’d be easy

There are many truisms in life. That is to say a statment that is obviously true and says nothing new or interesting. People spout them all the time like some kind of mantra. Something like ‘You’ll never know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have’ or ‘nothing is black and white’ are the kind of things that spring to mind. ‘Mama never said it would be easy’ surely fits along the same lines but it’s a fair bit snappier than most and to be pulled out in times of hardship with a wry smile on your face – assumably just before someone else tells you to shut your cakehole.

Anyway, you might be thinking that the above would be reason enough for today’s piece. But no. We used to have a jacket with ‘Mama never said it would be easy’ on the back and for some reason that somewhat useless phrase has stuck with me. Now maybe I’ve done a piece featuring the phrase perhaps it can now just leave me alone and not spring into my mind at inopportune times…

As with all the pieces I’ve been doing recently he’s a bit of mixed media magic featuring some spraypaint, crystal resin, dymo tape and whatever else I was using.
