Brixton whichever way you look at it

Given that we’d already done a ‘Bristol’ ambigram design before Christmas I thought it only fair to get Brixton in on the action. Knowing my current proclivities if I did a load of them they’d all have stripes on them so I limited myself to just two versions for now. One with stripes, obviously, and one with a wavy patterned design. In all fairness I’d probably have to respray the blue and grey one if anyone wanted it as my favourite part, the Ace of Aces logo bit, hasn’t really come out very well but I thought I’d wait and see if there was any interest first. They’re A2 in size and I’d also be happy to re-do with any particular background colourways as requested if anyone felt so inclined as to ask. So there you have it.

As a side note if you’re not familiar with Ram John Holder’s song ‘Brixton Blues’ then I suggest you get yourself to Youtube pretty sharpish and give your ears a little treat.

Cheers

When life gives you lemons…

When I was mixing up the black ink for printing these I put in more pigment that I thought necessary and it was proper black. At least it looked it. Strangely though once it had been printed it came up grey. I did a couple more just to check I wasn’t going mad and then thought about crying. Screen printing can be pretty frustrating sometimes. Rather than throw a sulk and just chuck everything in the bin I thought I’d make the best of the situation and salvage what I could and these are the result. I like them more than I should probably because I know just how close they came to being binned. It turns out I’d used an old pigment or possibly old base goop and it somehow loses it’s ability to hold decent colour. Everyday is a school day.

Anyway they’re on A2 paper and are made using the magic of screen printing and spray paint. Perhaps I’ll get round to doing them again in black and completing them as per my original vision someday. Who knows? Drop us a line if interested.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping beauty

Sleeping beauty

Whilst the rest of humanity has to deal with the excessive daily troubles of hurricanes, sexual assault, trade negotiations that no one has a clue about or perma-tanned presidents this lovely lady has decided to go to the land of Nod and slumber until some prince or princess has the mettle to wake her up. I’m not entirely sure what type of person that might be but then again I suppose that’s what this sleeping beauty is hoping for, a real hero type. Someone willing to risk it all against the odds and come up smelling of roses. I’m pretty sure she’ll be snoozing for a while but wish her the best of luck.

It’s A5 in size and made using my first ever lino cut

Ytuaeb gnipeels

There’s nothing worse than making a schoolboy error whilst resolutely proclaiming to be a professional. So any self respecting artist should really know better than to walk into the trap I did. Although I’ve never done any lino cutting before I know what the score is as i have screen printed on many occasions and the same rules apply. Being excited to start my lino cutting I jumped straight in without the necessary amount of thought and only on completion was my flaw evident. I forgot to reverse the image and text so it would print the  correct way round. D’oh…

Nothing to shake a stick at

Nothing to shake a stick at

Nothing to shake a stick at

‘Nothing to shake a stick at’ seems to be a phrase that confuses people in general and this woman in particular. A quick internet search reveals that the phrases origins are shrouded in mystery. Could it be from farmers counting cattle or maybe counting fallen foes in battle? Who knows? This picture has nothing to do with it anyway.

In our studio we have a stout old stick used to defend ourselves against the spiders that thrive there. One day I came in, fearful of the spiders as usual, and found that the other half of id-iom had done a thorough clean the day before so there was literally nothing to shake a stick at. I celebrated with this picture. They’re back now of course and twice as big. I think they’ve been feeding on the neighbourhood cats judging by the size of them…

Urban art exhibition @ Chapel Arts in Cheltenham

Now the Cheltenham Festival may have been and gone but if you live anywhere near the area here’s a hot little tip for you. We’re exhibiting a few pieces alongside other artists such as My dog sighs, Korp, Dice 67 and Zabou at the Urban Arts exhibition at Chapel Arts on Knapp Road in Cheltenham. It’s running from this Friday (25th March) until the 16th April. It’s always good to make it down on opening night if you can – some lovely artwork, a beer or two and if anyone asks you can sound like you’re doing something cultural. It’s in the balance at the moment whether we’ll be able to make it or not but if we do we’ll see you there…

Badvertising – Taste the feeling

It’s funny how many advertising slogans can be applied to the murky world of drugs. For today’s instalment in a series we’re imaginatively calling ‘badvertising’ we’ve gone for Coke Zero and the classic ‘Taste the feeling’ tagline. We could have just have easily used ‘real Coke taste and zero calories’ but preferred the classic tagline as it’s a little more descriptive.

Anyway, today’s piece is on my current canvas of choice, namely wood, and using my current favoured technique of laser engraving. Plus, just a little bit of white paint pen just to accentuate the obvious. Drop us a line if you’re interested…

Der Froschkönig Oder

Der Froschkönig Oder

Der Froschkönig Oder

Trust id-iom. Just as the UK votes Brexit we start getting to grips with German. Typical. This piece is for all those gals (or guys) who have found their lovely little frog prince and just need to seal the deal with a kiss. As you can see not only is this fella a king amongst frogs but he also has a catchy little gimmick to catch your attention – a small helium balloon showing how much he loves you. Just one kiss and he’ll transmogrify right in front of yours into the man of your dreams. You’ve just got to get over kissing a frog first.
