Just a little mining town up north

When I originally found this map of Doncaster in a big box of assorted maps underneath my desk I thought ‘This is perfect’, I know a few people from Donny so I’m sure I can come up with something smart and urbane. Then, of course, inspiration deserted me and left me staring at a map of Yorkshire with no grand plan in sight.

After staring at the map for what could have been a week I decided to get in touch with someone from Donny to try and help me find a little inspiration. They gave me the following to work with:

1. Jeremy Clarkson – his mother had the Paddington bear factory

2. Kevin Keegan

3. Lesley Garrett

4. John Parr who did St Elmo’s fire tune, actually comes to our local pub

Very hard Hugo we are just a little mining town up North

And that was enough to get me on my way. First I thought I’d try the route of the Paddington Bear factory but sadly couldn’t come up with anything good enough, so moved on to number two but football is lost on me so I decided to move on to number three which didn’t really give me anything to work with either. This meant I had to try and come up with something using number four and I truly thought this would be the one. Who doesn’t like a catchy 80’s hit for inspiration? Again, however, I came up empty.  I was just about to lose all hope of finding inspiration until I read the last line back to myself again and there it was…Just a little mining town up North.

Amor vincit omnia

Roman poet Virgil, writing way back in 38 BC, wrote ‘Omnia vincit amor et nos cedars amori’ which I’m sure we’re all aware translates as ‘Love conquers all; let us too, yield to love’. Which is a lovely sentiment so we ‘borrowed’ it. We’ve decided to go with the punchier, truncated version of ‘Omnia vincit amor’ and have left it in its original latin because quotes always sound classier in latin.

That’s about all you’re getting by way of explanation for today’s piece. Quite why the lady is in purple is for us to know and you to find out however. We can’t just spoon feed you everything…

She’s A2 in size and made using the magic of acrylic, spray paint and paint pen. If you’d like this mysterious lady and her ancient quote to adorn your wall just drop us a line or you may find her on our Big Cartel page some time soon.

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

The lad didn’t know he was different – that was until the day he fired purple laser beams from his eyes! It all started innocently enough. He was talking with his boss over Zoom when he was jokingly reminded about a regrettable incident in the lift the previous year. He tried to wisecrack back but the jibe had already got under his skin and then before you knew it a purple light started to crackle from his eyes. The next thing he knew he had burnt a hole clear through the laptop screen and window in front of him. The acrid smell of burning plastic filled the air. He wondered what on earth he was meant to do next…

Problematic Purple

As anyone who’s stuck with us long enough will know we always like to put a little write up with our pieces. Maybe it’s to give them a little more context, maybe it’s to give us a reason for doing the work in the first place. Who knows? It’s all quite confusing. Usually the write ups come fairly easily and after a small bit of editing it’s good to go.

Today has been more problematic. We’ve both given a go to coming up with something suitable and so far we’ve got one which revolves around the use of a poor double entendre – purple acai (tea)/purple Aki and one which involves a failed love triangle called ‘He promised her a lavender wedding’. The only thing they have in common is that they both feature a lady called Margaret who owns a publishing company. Take from that what you will…

What do you do when you have the urge to write your name in really big letters. As typography isn’t really our strong suit I decided that I would reel in my imagination and go for something a little more understated.

Of course, because I had decided to go for something understated I thought I had to go big in another way. It took me a little bit of time but I got there in the end, Colour. Colour has always been used in cultivating status, so I thought I might as well get in on it as well. After a little research, I decided upon the colour purple and you might be wondering why? According to surveys in Europe and North America, purple is the colour most often associated with rarity, royalty, magic, mystery, and piety and when combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction. Purple is also associated with the deadly sins, due to the fact that it is a colour that attracts attention, so, therefore, has come to represent vanity. I think we can all agree, that’s a pretty special colour!

Kiss me quick – before i implode!

kiss me quick before i implode 2

‘Kiss me quick, squeeze me slow’ would be the kind of thing you’d expect to find on a novelty hat in some godforsaken seaside town but this lady’s need is a bit more immediate. If she’s not kissed soon she’s going to implode. Which won’t be pretty – although possibly a little less messy than her exploding. Depending on just how quickly she needs to be kissed and how picky she is I’m sure there’s a few less salubrious places I could suggest where she would definitely come up trumps. Disaster averted. Next!

When the Muse is away…

When the Muse is away…

I’ve somehow woken up today with an awful cold but that hasn’t stopped me from doing a little art, it cures the soul apparently. So even if it isn’t going to get rid of my cold it will clear my soul. I’ll take whatever I can get at the moment to tell you the truth. Sometimes when I’m writing these posts the Muse just deserts me and I’m left wondering how to fill a small paragraph or two. Today would be a pertinent example of it.

You can probably tell as I’m halfway into my second paragraph and I’m still prattling nonsense unrelated to the picture above. This picture was in fact a small experiment at a more sketchy style stencil using a limited colour palette. I just thought a simple picture of a pretty girl would do it, no need to wallow in grimy hate filled pictures today, it just doesn’t seem right. There, whilst not under the Muse’s direct control and a little bit ill, that’s about the best I can come out with. It’s not funny, merely related information about the piece. I can also tell you that it’s hopefully to be used as a part of a larger piece but was initially done to see how the style would look once it’s sprayed. That’s all I can manage. Even I know when it’s time to quit so cheery bye for today…
