Moiety

This picture really does have it all. A classy design, laser cutting, hand painting, crystal resin, silver leaf, variegated blue/green gold leaf, glitter, a word that it turns out most people don’t seem to know and a dymo printed definition of said word. Just to clear things up a bit. Apparently use of the word ‘moiety’ was much more prevalent in the 1800’s. My brain refuses to tell me where it came to my attention but it’s been rattling around in there so I just thought it deserved to be let loose so it can be used a bit more. So here it is in all it’s redesigned id-iom glory. You’ll be hearing it more if I can manage to shoehorn it into a write up…

God save the Queen

For this commission the only instruction I was given was ‘bees’. Now that is the kind of commission I like. And this is what you get. A dwindling global bee population can only be bad news for puny humans as the bees pollinate an awful lot of the crops and flowers that we depend on for food. Without them we are somewhat doomed so it’s probably best if we take a bit better care of our little insect cousins and make sure they can continue doing their job. And, as a big bonus, they also know how to make honey (which the crystal resin on the picture is meant to represent). Without that we’d be left with wasp gravy and you wouldn’t want that on your morning toast.

Just think of the exposure

Today’s piece is one for the artists out there. Unlike just aboutu any other professions I can think of there is some weird thing with artists where people seem to expect you to work for free on the basis that doing whatever job they’re suggesting would be good exposure for you. You try that with a plumber and I’m pretty sure what happens next.

Frankly, given that we like painting up big walls and signing them, we’re okay at gathering that precious exposure for ourselves. Anyway this picture depicts my face and general demeanour when anyone even mentions working for ‘exposure’, the crystal resin represents my tears and the little bird is telling us we’re chumps for even listening to such a proposal and to run away as swiftly as my little legs will carry me…

The Red Star of Freedom

The gentleman we can see in the bottom right of this picture is smoking a cigarette in a bit of a daze. He is deep in thought as someone has just taken him to one side and told him all about the Red Star of Freedom and now his whole world has been turned upside down. He can’t stop thinking about it and the implications it has for him and everyone he knows. He knows he hasn’t got long to think about it before he has to make a choice. The decision is a fairly stark one. If he had a dice he’d probably let that make the decision for him. He can hear the clock ticking. Time is running out…

The Belgian Takedown

If you’ve never heard of the Belgian takedown I’m hardly surprised. It’s a particularly nasty method for a soldier to take out an enemy sentry whereby you sneak up behind him and grab his ankles from under him to take him to the floor then kick him in the family jewels whilst he’s down to induce shock then silently dispatch him by whatever means you like. Anyway, this guy is a Belgian takedown master. It’s his forte. He’s that good at it that they’ve given him medals for it. He has got a pretty intense stare though…

Electric Blue

Today’s write up is probably going to be somewhat opaque but sometimes that works best. If you’re not familiar with Electric Blue then it’s probably better it stays that way. If, however, you’re a gentleman of a certain age you will probably know what I’m referring to. This piece is a special commission for a good friend of id-iom’s. And when I say special commission I mean that he doesn’t know it’s on his way to him so hopefully he’ll appreciate it. It’s basically a very roundabout reference to an old shared joke that would shame even the stoutest of hearts and is by no means fit for retelling in such august company. It even comes complete with crystal resin drips that are perhaps reminiscent of something else. Or maybe that’s just me. Anyway, it is what it is…

Darren the moth

Crystal resin close up

Crystal resin close up

Darren was a just a moth like any other until the day he flew into an MOD research wing and quaffed some of the brightly coloured sugary liquid he found sitting on a lab desk. This seemed to displease a nearby lab assistant and after being chased around the lab for almost an hour he somehow managed to escape despite feeling very tired and somewhat ill. He wisely decided to retire to his little moth bed for the night.

In the morning he looked in the mirror and emitted a loud squeak (for that is what Death’s Head moth’s do) in surprise at what he saw. He was twice the size – with bulging wing muscles, had grown wing mounted cannons and a new sensor array and now looked resplendent in his strange new black and yellow livery. A strange feeling washed over him that perhaps this was his destiny. He decided there and then to raise an insect army and seize control of the state. We have a new enemy amongst us…

Mixed media piece on 24×30″ canvas. My favourite touch which doesn’t really come across too well on the photo is the crystal resin I’ve poured over the top which makes it look like there’s water dripping down the piece. If you’re interested in it then drop us a line…
