Something from the cellar (Blue Nun)

There I was aimlessly wandering the aisles of my local supermarket searching for an ingredient they undoubtedly didn’t have. I was feeling a little dispirited and glanced at the new wine description they’d put up for Blue Nun. Seeing the halfhearted description made me want to cry a little so I thought I’d see if I could jazz it up somewhat.

The previous description was ‘Popular wine from Germany with a citrusy tang and a hint of honey on the finish. Great with Asian noodles. Taste Guide 4.’ I think mine is a somewhat more honest appraisal of the wine’s true character. I’d like to think these will go unnoticed by the staff until some eagle eyed customer decides to spoil my fun and brings it to their attention. Only time will tell…

Cheers

We’ve already written a post about our time in Blackpool for Sand, Sea & Spray last weekend but we thought we’d do a little update on the piece as we had a little extra work on our piece done on the Saturday when My Dog Sighs popped over and added one of his great looking eyes to our lovely looking lady. He also managed to paint a few other bits and bobs down the same alley so if you’re in the neighbourhood it’s well worth a look.

Cheers

Taking the Cure – Sand, Sea & Spray 2013 Blackpool

Last year when we went to Blackpool for Sand, Sea & Spray we had to work in the driving rain all day (but still managed to get a couple of pieces done) and despite the weatherman’s warnings that this year was going to be pretty similar we set off from London with hope in our hearts. This being the UK however our dreams were soon to be shattered. Despite waking to sunshine it soon became clear that was not going to be the order of the day and so after finding our billboard spot on the Winter Gardens we set to work in a steady drizzle. Soon this escalated to full blown torrential rain that stopped play for a while as we were forced to wait it out in a doorway. From there on in for the rest of the day it was a cycle of rain, a snatch of sunshine and then more rain. We had to get finished in a day however as we had a wedding to attend on Saturday otherwise a strategic retreat to the nearest hostelry would have been in order.

During the afternoon My Dog Sighs turned up and we all agreed that the addition of some of his eyes on our lady would definitely be a good thing so he added them on Saturday (in glorious sunshine i hasten to add) – and surely she looks good with her one real looking eye and one of our eyes? The title and text of ‘Taking the cure’ refers to the Victorian pastime of coming to Blackpool to bathe in the sea as it supposedly had healing qualities.

Once we’d finished and dried off a little we went to have a quick beer, see what the Q&A session was like and catch up with whoever was about. All in all a good day out and we’d just like to extend our thanks to the S,S&S team who were all very helpful and accommodating.

Cheers

To stare at the stars and yet only see the soul

Blackpool rocks
Blackpool rocks

Due to the predicted adverse weather conditions we decided to make the trip to Sand, Sea and Spray on the Saturday morning rather than the Friday night. I’m still not sure if this was a good decision or not. After an early start and a gruelling journey we arrived in an overcast Blackpool and finally managed to make our way to our painting location for about 2pm. We got to work straight away as it wasn’t too wet or windy at that point. That was probably the first of our catalogue of mistakes. About 20 minutes later we had our first sustained downpour with accompanying wind which made a mockery of our attempts to paint the wall blue with masonry paint as it was dripping all over our painting and off the wall.

Not to be outdone by the weather we went to work on a second wall in our next brief window of opportunity whilst hopefully waiting for the other wall to dry before the rain closed in again and we had to retire to the safety of the car. By the end of the second ‘little shower’ the area was pretty much deserted but we soldiered on intent on getting it all finished. I won’t bore you with our tireless struggle against our implements and the weather but suffice it to say it was tough. Paint was spilled. Stencils were ripped. Words were exchanged. We had to make the best of the situation.

With Elton John as our backing music (he was playing on the promenade) we proceeded with a hastily thought out rearrangement of our original plan which would, we hoped, gives us a decent result. After a little further work we finally managed to reach completion. Regardless of the inclement weather we still managed to have a good time and get our work done which, I think, was something to be proud of. It’s just a shame that the UK weather in June isn’t very dependable as well we remember from our various trips to Glastonbury (which brings on a nostalgic feeling as it would be on next weekend if it were taking place this year…)

Cheers
