Just be your self (id-iom @ UPfest 2018)

For UPfest’s 10th incarnation (and our 9th visit) we thought we’d go for a couple of self portraits combined with an inspirational quote albeit with a little id-iom twist. The main quote says ‘Just be your self. Unless you can be id-iom. In which case be id-iom.’ We even managed to get a cryptic earworm included in morse code in the wallpaper design and shoehorned a Simpson’s reference in there for good measure (as UPfest had partenered The Simpsos for this year’s show).

It should all have been easy enough except we didn’t really count on the weather being quite so inclement. Wrestling huge stencils in the wind and rain is not really to be advised. We managed to get to some state of completion but not before the biggest rainstorm of the day had completely soaked us to the bone. All this after 4 weeks of the UK baking in eternal sunshine. Oh well, c’est la vie.

Cheers

The Blackboard Experience

This is my favourite entry of the day. A slightly wonky looking Manx cat. ‘Nuff said.

We were at home on the Isle of Man recently for Islexpo and Year of our Island and were asked if we could come up with something interactive that could be taken round a few locations this summer. Our answer was an 8ft x 8ft magnetic blackboard (that has been handily crafted so it can be broken down for easier transportation – cheers Dean!) with a stencil of the Isle of Man so people could add a magnet for their favourite place or some chalk pens to add their thoughts or whatever they like about the island.

The first revelation is that you can get magnetic paint! And it works just fine. Nothing like live experimentation. The second is that we got away with including Blinky from The Simpsons out in the sea towards Sellafield. Win.

Embiggen

Maps. You’ve got to love them. They can come in very useful. Although I doubt this map will be guiding anyone anywhere again. Destiny has something entirely different in store for this particular map. She’s become art.

Embiggen is intended to sound like a real word but in fact is completely fabricated. Embiggen, coined by Dan Greaney, has seen use in several scientific publications since its creation in an episode of the Simpsons.

This gentleman is trying to embiggen his arms somewhat so he can be like Stretch Armstrong. But alas i don’t think he’ll achieve it. For one he’s just a normal human called Geoff from Dorking (as the map suggests) and second he’s mucho crazy in the brain (in fact that probably helps when trying to grow your arms out – thinking outside the box and all that malarky). At least he’s happy!

It is made using acrylic charcoal and paint pen on a map. Its 47 cm x 87 cm in size and signed on reverse.

Here is the Ebay link
