Mama never said it’d be easy

There are many truisms in life. That is to say a statment that is obviously true and says nothing new or interesting. People spout them all the time like some kind of mantra. Something like ‘You’ll never know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have’ or ‘nothing is black and white’ are the kind of things that spring to mind. ‘Mama never said it would be easy’ surely fits along the same lines but it’s a fair bit snappier than most and to be pulled out in times of hardship with a wry smile on your face – assumably just before someone else tells you to shut your cakehole.

Anyway, you might be thinking that the above would be reason enough for today’s piece. But no. We used to have a jacket with ‘Mama never said it would be easy’ on the back and for some reason that somewhat useless phrase has stuck with me. Now maybe I’ve done a piece featuring the phrase perhaps it can now just leave me alone and not spring into my mind at inopportune times…

As with all the pieces I’ve been doing recently he’s a bit of mixed media magic featuring some spraypaint, crystal resin, dymo tape and whatever else I was using.

Cheers

The Keyboard Warrior

With the referendum now complete and the UK voting to leave the EU it would seem that all and sundry are out to vent their political frustrations on facebook. I can only assume everyone else’s facebook feeds are just some variation on the same theme as mine. Even those who seemingly had no political stance just a few days ago seem to suddenly have a full battery of opinions. And he’s not scared to use them.

Here we have a piece examining the repercussions of the first Brexit flame war. In a candid letter home to his mum from the frontlines in the battle for internet supremacy one plucky keyboard warrior is sure his righteous indignation will protect him and that it’ll all be over shortly. He thinks he’ll be back with his kids before too long. If only he knew. This is only the first salvo…

All your base are belong to us!

Even the NSA didn’t see this one coming. With the world in turmoil the cats have been talking and they’ve decided it’s time to make their move. Their dark motives are obscured behind a cute and fluffy visage – but don’t be fooled. They are taking over in their tiny nuclear powered tanks and they aren’t taking no for an answer. I for one welcome our new feline overlords…

The horse stares…

The centaur lady in this piece looks a little unnerved as she rears up with her WWI era helmet on. The text reads ‘The horse stares at its captor, barely remembering the free kicks of youth’.

I’ve been trying to write this for a while and that’s currently the best i’ve got. Which is far below the usual lacklustre standard of my posts. Sometimes it’s easy to do the write ups that accompany our pieces and some days it’s like pulling teeth. Unfortunately today is proving to be one of the difficult days. Do you know what? I give up.

Be still my beating heart

Be still my beating heart

Be still my beating heart

Apparently the earliest citation for the term ‘be still my beating heart’ comes from William Mountfort’s Zelmane from 1705:

“Ha! hold my Brain; be still my beating Heart.”

Now I quite like that quote and think it’s a nice romantic concept so I thought I’d give it a little id-iom twist just in time for Valentine’s Day. Apparently Sting did a song called ‘Be still my beating heart’ but i’ve neglected to link to it as i’ve taken a hit for the team and it’s really not that good. On the plus side though I’ve also got a related bit of street work to go with this so as long as the weather holds we should have something up in time for the big day. This piece is created using the magic of stencils and spraypaint and is on a nice big bit of A2 paper. I’m sure it would make the perfect give for somebody’s special someone…

It is A3 in size and signed on reverse. Here is the Ebay link

The Mark of the Night Writer

“I find this work menacing/playful because of the way the sublime beauty of the gesture seems very disturbing in light of the eloquence of this piece.” I thought i’d start with a quote about this piece from a very well respected website as it really seems to capture the essence of this piece.

I’m only joking as this piece is not so easy to describe. Unless, of course, you recognise the symbol in the middle in which case I need explain no further. Winter is coming.

The Game of Love

Some in-progress shots (and final shot) of our latest piece – The Game of Love. This picture reminds me of my (misspent) youth although I suppose a picture of a gambler/fruit machine would perhaps be more fitting….
