Abstract landscape IOM (diptych)

After a brief hiatus we’re back on the scene! Sometimes inspiration is hard to come by and sometimes it’s as easy as having a look out of the window. Today’s piece was definitely the latter. Especially as we currently have the verdant pastures of the beautiful Isle of Man to view. A brief glance out the window at the green plants and fields, blue sky and various flowers gave me my colour palette then it was just a job of locating a couple of  canvases and setting to work for an abstract landscape. Whether you’d recognise it as such is none of my business. 

They’re on 40x40cm canvases and are meant to be a diptych but I’m still unsure on the best way to orientate or position them so that’s up to you…

So I had to pop over to the East End for some paint for a big piece currently being painted at the Electric Social in Brixton and I thought to myself ‘What a perfect opportunity to do a little street drop!’ So before setting off from Brixton I packed a bag full of goodies to leave on the street for our ‘Back to the Future‘ mixtape & art project. Foolishly I only got one slate out as I somehow forgot to do the rest whilst I was enjoying the sun in a beer garden. That said one is better than none. Oh, what a C unit i am! Just wait til the other half of idiom finds out…

Anyway, the mix on the back of this piece of slate is by a good friend of id-iom’s who dj’s under the name of Rogue Fader. Even if you don’t have the chance to find the slate you can still enjoy the C Unit mix here. It should be enough to keep you amused on a Friday morning (or indeed afternoon or evening).

Ready or not, here i come!

So, it’s been a while since we’ve put one of our ‘Back to the Future‘ art & mixtape combo’s out. But that’s not entirely our fault. The weather has only recently begun to play ball again after a brief stint a couple of weeks ago. Anyway this one features the likeness of one half on id-iom just moments before he uncovers his eyes to witness the unbroken sunshine we’ve been having this week. Although by the time he’s blinked it’ll probably be back to winter conditions…

The musical accompaniment taped to the back of the slate cover art is a frothy little summertime mix guaranteed to get you in the mood to party. I can only hope whoever finds it appreciates it. We’ve got a few more of these in the barrel and ready to go so watch this space.

Here we have the third installment of our Back to the Future mixtape project which sees us combine two of our loves – music and street art.

Our plan is simple. Get some new mixes together, burn them on CD and then put them out on the street with some exclusive slate cover art to see what happened. The piece is the size of a standard roofing slate (about 40 x 28 cm) and has the CD securely taped to the back so she should last a reasonable amount of time out in the open. It has been completed using the magic of paint pens, spraypaint and stencils. They are signed on reverse with our trademark id-iom stencil and logo.

With sunshine the prevailing weather condition for once we can finally get round to the idea that summer – and the always amusing festival season – is on the way. I’ve been to Glastonbury every available year since 1999 and thoroughly enjoyed myself every time – come rain or shine. I’m sure this year will be no exception. The poor lady in this piece however is not having such a great time as she’s gone to a festival and someone has callously broken her heart. My best advice to her would be to head to the bar…

This is the second instalment of our ‘Back to the Future’ mixtape project which sees us combine our two of our loves – music and street art. This is the second id-iom mix called ‘Futility’ and will soon be followed by mixes from a (hopefully) eclectic range of other Djs.

There’s some contact details on the back and we’re hoping that we’ll get a reply/critique/abuse via email from whoever found it and then hopefully they’ll upload it to the web and share it around for further praise/ridicule. So, if you see one of these suckers on the street feel free to take it home and then lambast us via email on our shoddy skills and poor tune selection.

Back to the Future – Exclusive id-iom mix tape with original slate cover art! All for the grand price of nothing! You’ve just got to find it…

It’s 2013 and we’re going back to the future with our street art take on the classic mix tape. It’s a combination of that old school hop with that new school hip! Although we have had to move with the times so we’ve gone and burned it on CD.

Both members of id-iom have been djing for more years than we care to remember and rather than go the inevitable route of uploading our mixes to Soundcloud and have no-one listen to it we’ve gone all experimental and attempted to fuse our street art activities and proclivity for making mix tapes. We’ve completed the hour long mix and then done the slate cover art to compliment the tunes. From there it’s just a matter of putting it on the street and seeing what happens.

Only a very small number of copies exist and ideally we’re hoping that we’ll get a reply/critique/abuse via email from whoever found it and then hopefully they’ll upload it to the web and share it around for further praise/ridicule. Aha! That's why she has that enigmatic smile. Because of the cute squirrel.

We’ve been a little quiet of late but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy! We have in fact been very busy working with dangerous animals and giant stencils on a new bar that has opened in Brixton.

The Electric Social on Acre Lane is now open for business and looking spiffing – complete with id-iom enhanced interior! Downstairs we have done a 10 metre section of downstairs wall with an Electric Social lightbulb wallpaper and a big piece over it entitled ‘id-iom’s How to Get Your Man’. Then upstairs we have done a large Electric Social cassette tape behind the stage. Scattered throughout we have painted numerous happy woodland animals. There’s mice, rats, magpies, a stoat and an owl. Unfortunately there’s a couple of bad eggs that have slipped in too – as the bloody squirrels have only been at the crack again! They’ll be chewing on the wiring again before you know it…

The Brixton crack squirrels were actually inspired by a couple of ‘true’ stories (I use true in the loosest sense of the word – mainly that it was reported by The Guardian and The Sun newspapers).

NEWS JUST IN – it’s been confirmed that one of my favourite DJ’s – A Skillz – will be playing at the the grand opening of the Electric Social on Friday 30th September. Now I just hope they were serious about that bar tab for us…

Cassette time

 

After doing a blue version of this canvas which we gave to the manager of the soon-to-be open Electric Social we finally got round to doing a couple more for them to play with. The wording to go on the tape is yet to be finalised (depending on what they want).

We will be moving on with getting some work up in the venue in the next couple of days. And we even get to use a scissor lift. So there…

A starter for ten…

We have been commissioned to do some work for a new bar that is opening in Brixton later this month. The Electric Social is to be reborn on the site of The Gold Coast on Acre Lane and is already looking to be something pretty special (and that’s before we’ve got in to add our bit of sparkle!) It’s set over two floors and is due to be open for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend towards the end of the month so we’ve been hard at work for the past couple of weeks getting a load of designs together which will be adorning various walls.

Anyway the piece above was done as after doing far too many hours of pure design I decided to take a little time out from the computer to get practical and cut a couple of stencils that are definitely going to be used in there somewhere – and this is one of them. We are looking to get some pretty big pieces up so excited doesn’t begin to cover it (especially as all the design work is now pretty much all done – so it’s onto the exciting paint flinging part next!)

We’ll have some updates in the coming weeks but you can expect some classic id-iom work…
