It’s day 2 of Insect Week here at id-iom and today it’s the turn of the UK’s largest beetle – the  mighty stag beetle. It is now accepted that stag beetles, whilst of an interesting design, are harmless to humans – but it didn’t always be this way. According to British folklore they were capable of summoning thunder and lightning and even flew around with hot coals in their jaws setting fire to buildings! Now if that isn’t slander right there then I don’t know what is. It’s downright rude. In an effort to rectify this we’ve started legal proceedings against British folklore on behalf of all stag beetles. Until then all we’ve got to hold your attention is a picture of a very regal looking stag beetle called Gatsby.

If you need Gatsby adorning your wall then his critical dimensions are 21 x 29.5 cm (A4) and he’s been created using the magic of acrylic and paint pen. Just drop us a line and we can make it so…

When Superheroes Kiss

When superheroes kiss strange things can happen. Never mind when they really go for it. Here we have Spanish superhero Limon Cojones getting it on with Miami based super strong wrestler Blue Thunder. What’s going to happen next is anyone’s guess. I’ve seen this kind of thing before but the only consistent thing is that it’s going to be unpredictable. Perhaps it will start raining lemonade and kittens. It’s happened before. Which kind of means it’s unlikely to happen again.

This is the first of some sketches for bigger pieces that all revolve around the strange but surprisingly mundane love lives of superheroes. Why? Well, I’ve got to fill my time somehow and this seemed like a good idea at the time.

As an aside, I’ve got no idea what the Japanese text says as I translated it ages ago and have forgotten. I’m going to go with something like ‘superhero kiss kiss’ but I wouldn’t be suprised if it said something else entirely. So, if you are proficient in Japanese maybe you could help me out…

Behold a pale horse…

There I was doing a bit of a spring clean in my studio/shed when I come across some old canvases and stencils behind a paint splattered table top. As it was Sunday and there’s always something better to do that tidying up I decided to put all my finds to good use. With the background already largely finished on this one a somewhat ghostly horse suggested itself for reasons best known to the muse. A little rummaging through the stencils and I’d found just the one to get on there. Once it was done I thought a little text around the edge to give it a little lift was all that was needed. The text reads:

‘And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying ‘Come and see’. And I saw. And behold a pale horse…’

As the canvas is old and a little cracked from winter in the shed I’m thinking the street is the best place for this bad lad. Now if I can just find somewhere suitable…
