The balloon we thought would never burst

The balloon we thought would never burst

The balloon we thought would never burst

Here at id-iom we are relentless wombles and nothing escapes the all seeing eye for identifying potentially useful junk. In the  studio we had a helium balloon of unknown origin, but we had somehow acquired it all the same. Having been a strangely comforting presence in the studio for months now it would follow you from room to room without ever seeming to deflate. It was becoming quite the talking point. Anyway, after a few small impromptu beers on Thirsty Thursday we managed to lose the balloon. The next morning we tried to piece together our last memories of the old girl and this picture is our best attempt at a visual representation of our available memory. If only it was all a little clearer…

Lost in the ether

Lost in the ether

Lost in the ether

Yesterday, whilst attempting to paint on the wrong side of a window, I managed to do a bit of other work pretty much by accident. Which was lucky as everything else attempted yesterday was just not fit for purpose. It was during the last few dying minutes of daylight, probably about 4pm (how depressing) while I was waiting to take a photo of the abortive window painting that I decided to go outside for a breath of fresh air when I happened to glance at the one of the numerous doors along the yard when an idea popped straight into my pea-sized brain.

Knowing my vision could crumble at any second I ran inside to find some paint only to be left with some watery black paint and no paint brush in sight. ‘No worries’ I thought to myself, ‘I’m a resourceful womble’ and so proceeded to look outside for the exact kind of stick needed like a primate hunting for a primitive tool. Anyway, before the light had vanished, I’d already done what was needed and even managed to get a somewhat ethereal photo to boot.

To drink from your lips…

To drink from your lips…

Now if there is one thing I love it’s a good bit of wombling. You know; making good use of the things that we find, things that the everyday folk leave behind. Anyway, there i was heading to the pub one evening when I chance upon this piece of wood. I’m still unsure of it’s previous purpose in life but it now has a higher calling. It sat in the hall of my house for about 3 months before inspiration struck and I had an actual plan for dealing with it. After walking past it everyday an idea had percolated into my head. I came up with the idea of a couple kissing, now I’m not entirely sure where the idea came from but that’s the muse for you.

So far so good. But then ‘Iceberg! Dead ahead!’ The trouble lay with the fact that the piece of wood was incredibly uneven and paint just didn’t look good on it so, for a short while, it was back to the drawing board until a solution jumped out at me. That solution came in the form of some polyfilla from the pound shop, which just seemed perfect for my plans.

After applying two tubs of the stuff and sanding it down it was ready for the final touches which consisted of a little painting here a touch up of polyfilla there and voilà. There still seemed to be something missing though, which I rectified with some words around the edge of the piece saying:

“Finally I will drink life from your lips
and wake up from this ever lasting sleep”

The only problem now is what to do with it as its now quite heavy and pretty fragile. Hmmmmm? Choices!!! It may well have to end up on the street if I can think of somewhere suitable unless someone wants to give it a better home somewhere…

Being Schooled

Being Schooled

Being Schooled

Over the years I’ve become quite the collector of found photographs, particularly passport shots (it’s surprising how many you find when looking for them). Now, whilst the photo in the picture isn’t a passport photo I did pick it up on my travels as I absolutely loved it. Just look the way the pair of them seem relaxed yet at the same time rather hostile. So after having the photo by my computer for quite a while I eventually decided to use it on a piece that had been forming in my head. Whenever I looked at the photo two things always came to mind, the first being the scene in Star Wars in the Mos Eisley cantina:

[Ponda Baba gives Luke a rough shove and starts yelling at Luke in an alien language which Luke doesn’t understand]

Dr. Evazan: [explaining] He doesn’t like you.

Luke: Sorry.

Dr. Evazan: [grabbing Luke] *I* don’t like you either. You just watch yourself. We’re wanted men. I have the death sentence on twelve systems.

Luke: I’ll be careful.

Dr. Evazan: You’ll be dead!

Obi-Wan: [intervening] This little one’s not worth the effort. Come, let me get you something.

[Dr. Evazan shoves Luke across the room and pulls out a blaster]

Bartender: No blasters! No blasters!

[Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber, killing Dr. Evazan and severing Ponda Baba’s arm]

The other is a friends favourite insult of ‘Go fuck yourself’ mainly because he looks like the guy sitting back taking it easy in the photo even if the guy does look considerably older. Eventually I decided on the second scenario for the inspiration for the piece.

Cheers
