You know how they say there’s a bullet somewhere with your name on it? In this case it was a giant arrow and it definitely had my name on it. Anyway, there I was minding my own business ambling to the shop when I hear an odd whooshing sound behind me getting swiftly louder. I stop for a second and am just turning around when something flashes behind me and lodges itself in the pavement with a concrete rending crunch. For a second I’m in disbelief. Then I realise that my old nemesis has broken the ceasefire and loosed a first salvo of their house busting giant arrows… THIS. MEANS. WAR!
A throwback to a 2015 street intervention where we got into a little altercation with our old nemesis.Seriously though, what else are you meant to do when you find a bit of street furniture that has been knocked over by a car?
If you’ve never heard of the Four Sevens (or ‘Cuatro Siete’ to give them their original, although now lesser used, name) then it’s probably better you keep it that way. The Four Sevens are an exclusively female gang of high end cat burglars. If an original Warhol has mysteriously disappeared from a penthouse apartment then you probably know where to start looking. Although you won’t find anything, obviously. Because they’re exceptionally good at what they do.
Their mere existence can only be inferred rather than known for sure. If you know the right people in the wrong circles then you’ll hear talk of all manner of daring escapades carried out in the most challenging of circumstances.
You might begin to wonder how we know such things. Unfortunately, that’s not for me to say. ‘Four Sevens’ is on A4 and made using hot foil printing, acrylic and paint pen. Drop us a line if you need it in your life. If they hear you’ve got it though it may not last for long…
Once, when Sarah was a small girl being tucked into bed, she got the strange notion that the sun wasn’t going to rise the next morning. She tried to explain her thoughts to her father but he waved her concerns away and wished her a good night. Sarah didn’t sleep a single wink that night and while it was still dark she crept out of bed and down into the garden.
She waited for what felt like an eternity in the cold and dark willing the sun to come up. Eventually the first rays of sunlight heralded the arrival of dawn and, a short while thereafter, the sun’s warm embrace. Once the sun was fully up she crept back to bed with a jubilant smile on her face. To this day she still occasionally gets that same notion that the sun won’t rise so she’ll stay up all night to ensure it’s arrival and she can once again feel the sun’s warm embrace.

According to the internet an idiom is ‘A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words’. We are called ‘id-iom’ and ‘to bite the bullet’ is an idiom. You can see what we’ve done there can’t you?
This piece is painted on a 49 x 40cm box canvas (3.5cm deep) and features some little googly eyes. What more could you want?
Karen has always had a squiffy eye and doctors have told her that she can have surgery to have it corrected if she wants but she’s never wanted to have it done and never will. She likes the fact that people find it off-putting and when talking to her just don’t know which way to look. Karen also has a knack to roll her bad eye into the back of her head to really hit it home.
Through the years people have called her many names due to her affliction but one that has stuck because Karen liked it herself was ‘Ambly’. Karen also has a skill which is a direct cause of her wonky eye: she can tell if anything is squiffy even by the slightest degree with just a quick glance. Due to this many business sectors hold Karen in great demand for her unusual abilities. From the scientists at CERN to the builders of the worlds largest skyscrapers, to Tony from down Karen’s local pub who always asks her to see if he’s squiffy but Karen is always to polite to give him an answer. In all fairness everyone at the pub already knows the answer to that one…
So how do we start a write up about lady Cheltenham? Maybe its best to explain our monumental balls up that started it all.
There we were during the week looking at the weather forecast and lo and behold it forecast rain for the Saturday. This year our design consisted of quite a bit of emulsion so we thought it best to get an early start so that it wouldn’t run in the rain. So with as much preparation as we could muster we headed down on Friday to get an early start which we did with an ease that id-iom is known for.
When we got to the Frog and Fiddle is when the problems started. The wall that looked like the one we were painting hadn’t been painted white like the rest and it seemed a little wider than what we were expecting, so we asked the bar staff who pointed at another wall which we took for consent to paint. In hindsight this was probably not the best idea.
Lets move forward to Saturday lunchtime when we finally dragged ourselves out of bed after a few too many drinks the night before we set off back to the frog and fiddle to finish our piece but i think you can already guess we had painted the wrong wall. With a few expletives thrown about for our stupidity we set about trying to get the new wall finished before either the rain stopped play or the after party started.

Sunbathing has a bit of a bad rap these days. Nowadays people are more likely to use fake tan than actually sunbathe. This could probably be put down to the scientific evidence that prolonged exposure to UV rays and sunshine can cause skin cancer which absolutely no one wants at all. Tamara here however was never one to worry about such things and revels in the sun’s glorious rays.
‘Scorching’ is painted on a found table top that I came home with after wombling my way back from the pub late one night. Given the weight of it I’m still not sure how I managed it back home with it all by myself but somehow I clearly did. After painting the portrait I felt it needed a little more so after a quick ferret around in the miscellaneous art supplies box I came up with a chisel of sorts and some lighter fluid. A little hard work and some flambe action and the burned lettering was done. Then it was onto the question of how to stick some real sand to it…

Just let it be!’ is a common enough refrain heard up and down the country on a Friday night. The Beatles even famously sang a song about it where the mantra of ‘Let it be’ is repeated many times. Sometimes it’s just not that easy though…

We here at id-iom are always striving to find new techniques to add that extra dimension to our artworks. To this end we decided to leave a piece of paper on the roof of the shed to see what kind of an effect entropy would have. It turns out she’s a harsh mistress. After enduring more rain, wind and shine than your average bit of art paper we have this decrepit specimen as our result. In all honesty we probably left it out to the elements for a tad too long but we weren’t far off getting the right kind of distress we were looking for. We’ll know better for next time. Onward and upward in the ever expanding search for knowledge…
Sally here is an old fashioned girl and she believes the new generation of so called ‘millenials’ are just not making mayhem like they used to. In her youth Sally would think nothing of stripping off and having a water fight in the garden with her flatmates. These days that would either get you arrested or make you an unintentional viral star within a matter of minutes. That’s all I’ve got for today.
As seems to be the case I couldn’t decide whether I was looking for a more minimal black and white version or something with a bit more colour so decided to do both. I now know which I prefer but is there a consensus on which is preferable? There’s bonus points on offer if you can tell me where the original image was appropriated from…
