It’s not like there was anything good on anyway…

As part of ongoing sojourn into painting some weird stuff we’ve painted up 8 monitor screens that are to be used as part of a giant Christmas tree made up of screens. Apparently most of the screens will playing little video’s on a loop and we had to take care of the non functioning ones.  Hopefully some pictures of the big beast in action will be forthcoming. We were asked to make them a little ‘Christmassy’ so we did our best considering it was us doing them. Anyway, they are what they are and I just hope they went down well.

Dashing through the snow…

We get some odd requests from time to time so when we were asked to paint up a wooden cutout set consisting of Santa, some snowmen, a couple of reindeer, a Xmas tree and a sleigh we thought it sounded like fun. Painting outside in freezing conditions however is not the most fun. If you combine the two then this is the end result.

Sinister Santa looks like he’s been on the Red Stripe all morning and he cares not that he’s pulled up on some double yellow lines, the reindeer appear to have been vandalised, the sleigh pimped, the tree dipped in psychedelics and the snowmen look like the result of some abominable colour based genetic tampering. It must have been quite the night. Let’s just hope it’s his final blowout before his Xmas rush…

It’s all fun and games…

We haven’t posted for a while but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy – because we have. We were tasked with coming up with a nice Christmas design with a little id-iom twist. Which is sometimes tougher than it sounds. After a few schmaltzy design dead ends we finally hit on the ‘fun and games’ quote which seemed just perfect for a Christmas party. Once we’d thrown some green fade stripes and festive baubles on the design we were good to go.

The classy foldable board is about 2.5m square and is to be used as a dancefloor backdrop for an upcoming Christmas event. They’ve got some UV lights which will strobe on the board once it’s in situ so we included some UV reactive paint on the lettering and some little snowflakes which are otherwise invisible. Unfortunately we don’t have a blacklight in order to test how well it worked but I’m quietly confident. To finish we also drilled a few holes in the baubles so we could put some fairy lights through for that extra pizzazz. We couldn’t leave the boards out all day in order to get a twinkly night shot so you’ll just have to trust me that they look the business. That is all.

Emergency Riot Brick

My what a busy morning we’ve had. From conception to completion in just a couple of hours. The emergency riot brick is the dubious result.

If you find yourself in a certain set of conditions then the emergency riot brick really is a must. Pretty does what it says on the tin. A big plus side is that it’s reusable and when you’re not actively using it it doubles as a handy door stopper. We’ll be taking pre-orders from tomorrow.

The White Crown

Well, painting outside is certainly not as much fun as it was even just a few weeks ago. It’s cold, the light is bad to begin with and fades very quickly and paint takes ages to dry. Bah humbug. Today’s piece is based on a photo taken in much warmer climes however. The beautiful Islas Mujeres in sunny Mexico to be precise. We decided we’d work with that and then try to get a bit weird. After a few false starts The White Crown is the final result and I’m quite happy with how it all turned out. What entirely it all means is difficult to fathom but sometimes you just have to let the Muse take you wherever it is you’re going. At least we got there in the end.

Tolistoj (a.k.a The case of the ambiguous ambigram)

After coming up with this ambigram design (which reads the same upside down) I showed it to the other half of id-iom who was a little perplexed as to what it said. After bringing the debate to a wider audience on Facebook it would seem that I opened a tin of worms as it’s apparently not at all clear what it says and I had numerous different answers as to what it might be.

I realise I could tweak the image to make it less vague and ambiguous but I decided I quite liked the idea that it wasn’t entirely decipherable and was more like trying to decode graffiti tags so decided to run with it. To celebrate the various different answers I received I’ve come up seven different versions of the design and each one has been titled in dymo letters with one of the guesses. It’s pretty plain to me what it says but then I guess perception is in the eye of the beholder so I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

They’re on A2 paper and made using the magic of stencils and spraypaint. The ‘Ace of Aces’ bit is pretty cool if I do say so myself. Drop me a line if you’re interested (or confused).

Flower power

Did you know that the human skull is comprised of 22 bones that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle? Every day is a school day. This skull however is made up of little flowers. How cute. Given that my favourite part of the Hop-Tu-Naa/Halloween related artwork we put up on Monday was the skull we used for the background I thought it deserved a second outing where it could feature a little more prominently. Plus, today is the Day of the Dead so it’s quite fitting. Here it is looking resplendent on some A3 paper I marbled then scrawled on. The dymo text reads ‘The skull flowers but once a year’. So there you have it.
