Off the cuff

Off the cuff

Off the cuff

I’ve managed to damage my rotator cuff somehow. If you’ve ever done the same you’ll know how incredibly painful it is. I only usually cry at soppy Hollywood movies like Cool Runnings but a few days ago I have to admit i might of got a little teary thanks to my own shoulder. It would have to be my right shoulder as, of course, I’m right handed which means work has slowed down somewhat.

That said i did manage to finish this piece which is a kind of self portrait in the fact i think it perfectly interprets how i’m feeling at the minute. Eyes that look both wild and sedated at the same time. And I’ve added the crown to show everyone what a big boy I am dealing with such unamusing sensations. Painted on A3 paper using acrylic, paint pen, charcoal and gold leaf. Drop us a line if interested.

Get the London look…

According to a December 2016 Telegraph article London is the cocaine capital of Europe – but only during the week. Apparently we come second to Antwerp when you add in weekend usage. It seems we like to lay off a bit on the week as we’ve been hitting it a bit hard during the week. Go figure.

Anyway that allows me to segue nicely into today’s piece featuring a young lady doing her bit to get us back to top place. It’s laser cut on wood then hand painted and features Revlon’s snappy marketing line that fits so nicely and a little snippet from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s ‘White Lines’. Once you’ve added a bit of crystal resin with some diamond dust glitter in then you’re good to go with another certified id-iom piece.

She’d look great once framed. Drop us a line if you’re interested.

Moiety

This picture really does have it all. A classy design, laser cutting, hand painting, crystal resin, silver leaf, variegated blue/green gold leaf, glitter, a word that it turns out most people don’t seem to know and a dymo printed definition of said word. Just to clear things up a bit. Apparently use of the word ‘moiety’ was much more prevalent in the 1800’s. My brain refuses to tell me where it came to my attention but it’s been rattling around in there so I just thought it deserved to be let loose so it can be used a bit more. So here it is in all it’s redesigned id-iom glory. You’ll be hearing it more if I can manage to shoehorn it into a write up…

I said I wouldn’t…

It’s probably just me but I think the phrase ‘I said I wouldn’t but I did it anyway’ has a kind of roguish charm to it. Pretty much a pirate amongst phrases. Why I saw fit to combine it with 80’s icon Pac-Man giving you a wink & a cheeky thumbs up and a weird black and white optical illusion style background is tricky to explain but I did it anyway. Designing and laser cutting the image on wood was the easy part. Hand painting the thing proved to be a bit trickier but I got there eventually. Now what to do with it? Perhaps  the street beckons…

Bonum Iaculat Me Babber (id-iom @ UPfest 2017)

So it’s that time of year when we pack the id-iomobile with just about everything we’ve got and head down to Bristol for UPfest. After discarding about a dozen designs we settled on ‘Bonum Iaculat Me Babber’ partly because we both thought it was an impactful design and we could include some 3D sculptural elements but also because it was Wednesday and we were running out of time.

On Saturday the weather was looking a little dicey so we were aiming to get finished by 4 when the rain was predicted. Luckily the rain didn’t come til 6 so despite the fact we actually finished about 5.30 all was well. The translated text says ‘Good shot me babber’ with the first bit being in Latin (as I thought it sounded mysterious and a bit classier) and ‘me babber’ being a Bristolian phrase meaning ‘my friend’ or similar. Adding the arrows, cigarette and monocle gave it that final id-iom touch and once we’d got a shot featuring the tree in the background looking like his hair we were free to quaff some ‘mission completed’ beers. Cheers to all the UPfest crew for having us and putting on such a sterling performance. as usual.

Something a bit more Formal

Capitalist lapdogs that we are we sometimes choose to work for actual money rather than the superior feeling that comes from being part of a wildly successful artistic team or , of course, ‘exposure’. As a case in point here’s a building company logo sprayed on the hoardings surrounding their site in an effort to deter graffiti artists from desecrating the boards. The irony is not lost on me.

She walks in beauty (id-iom @ WXSP 2017)

For our fifth visit to Whitecross Street Party we thought we’d go for something mysterious and classy. Whether or not that’s worked is up to you to decide. The lady is based on a picture of ‘plus size’ model Robyn Lawley. Why on earth she is referred to as ‘plus size’ is beyond me though. If you saw her in the street I’m pretty much ‘plus size’ would be the last thing you’d be thinking. It’s an odd world we inhabit.

The lettering we’ve used all over the piece is Lord Byron’s poem ‘She walks in beauty’. Apparently he went to a ball and met his cousin by marriage, Mrs Anne Beatrice Wilmot, who was in mourning and wearing a black dress set with spangles and next morning he’d come up with what is widely regarded as his most famous work. Inspiration can strike at strange times it would seem. Once you’ve combined that with our extra busy striped background then you’ve got another certified id-iom piece. It’s on a 120cm square board. Just drop us a line if interested.

A big thanks to Teddy for having us and, as ever, it’s nice to catch up with the various people that dropped by for a chat. Let’s hope we can bring back some glorious sunshine for next year…

Cheers
